This protects the app instance inside the folder; it does not necessarily move your existing conversations or protect the regular app outside it. If you only want to hide message previews, look for notification-preview controls instead.
What “locking text messages” means on a Galaxy
Samsung’s documented app-level option is Secure Folder, a protected space that can hold apps and private data behind its own lock. You can choose a PIN, password, or pattern; fingerprint access may also be available, depending on the device and software.
Adding a messaging app to Secure Folder creates a separate app copy. Samsung says apps in the folder can operate independently, including with separate accounts where the app supports them. The setup guidance does not establish that your existing message history automatically transfers or syncs to the copy, or that all incoming texts will be delivered to it.
- Protect the app: Secure Folder adds an access step before someone can open the app instance inside the folder.
- Hide lock-screen previews: Use the notification-preview settings available on your phone or in your messaging app. The exact controls vary, and Secure Folder is not needed just to change previews.
Set up Secure Folder and add your messaging app
- Open Settings and search for Secure Folder if you do not see it in the menus. Samsung’s path for Android 14 and later is Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder. Older Android versions can use different paths.
- Follow the setup prompts and choose a PIN, password, or pattern. If fingerprint access is offered and you want to use it, enable it during setup or in the folder’s settings.
- Open Secure Folder and add the messaging app you actually use, or install it from the app store available inside the folder. Adding an installed app makes a separate copy rather than moving the original app.
- Open the app copy in Secure Folder and check whether it shows the conversations and account you expect. Confirm which messaging app is active on your phone and whether it is set as your default before relying on the folder copy for incoming texts.
- In Secure Folder settings, configure Auto lock Secure Folder. Available choices depend on your software version. Samsung’s US instructions for Android 16 with One UI 8 say the “Each time I leave an app” choice was removed, the default is “When screen turns off,” and you can choose Lock and exit manually from the folder menu.
Samsung says that if Secure Folder is encrypted and locked, its apps pause and notifications wait until the folder is decrypted. If you need message notifications while it is locked, check how that behavior works for your particular phone and messaging app before depending on this setup.

If Secure Folder is missing or you forget its lock
Secure Folder may not appear if your particular Galaxy model does not support it. Search Settings first; if it remains absent, check Samsung support for your exact model and software version. Menu labels and availability can vary by device, Android version, One UI release, and country.
If setup offers a Samsung-account lock-reset option, enable it if you may need a recovery route and keep access to that account. Samsung warns that without reset enabled, forgetting the folder credential can require removing and setting up Secure Folder again.

Check which messaging app you should install
Install the specific app you use—such as Google Messages, Samsung Messages, or another messaging app—inside Secure Folder. The separate copy may not behave exactly like the regular app: whether it can access your existing history, receive SMS or RCS messages, or show notifications depends on the app and device configuration. Samsung’s Secure Folder instructions do not settle those details for every app, model, and carrier.
For the US market, Samsung’s current guidance recommends Google Messages as the default and says affected devices can no longer download Samsung Messages from the Galaxy Store after July 2026. Samsung describes devices running Android 11 or lower as unaffected by that end-of-service notice. This timing and availability statement is US-specific; do not assume it applies worldwide.
