You usually cannot prove a song is AI-generated just by listening. In a 2025 blind test commissioned by Deezer, 97% of respondents failed to distinguish two fully AI-generated tracks from one human-made track. Platform labels and artist disclosures can help, but a missing label is not proof that AI was not used. Treat listening impressions, automated detectors and artist-history clues as clues—not verdicts.
What counts as AI-generated music?
“AI-generated” can describe several different things, so a single AI-or-human label may leave out important context. A track might be generated almost entirely from a prompt, contain an AI-created instrumental layer, use generated lyrics, feature a synthetic or cloned-sounding vocal, or pair human-performed audio with AI-generated visuals. A human can also use AI tools while composing, arranging or producing a song.
YouTube’s music-partner guidance groups submissions as “Fully Gen AI,” “Partly Gen AI” or “No Gen AI.” Its examples distinguish a prompt-generated song from a human arrangement that includes an AI-generated bassline or string layer, and from human-performed audio paired with AI-generated video visuals. Those are platform metadata categories, not independent judgments about a song’s quality, authorship or legal status. Ordinary computer-based recording and production are not, by themselves, evidence of generative AI use.
Can you hear whether a song was made with AI?
Sometimes a listener may notice something unusual, but sound alone is not a reliable way to establish how a track was made. In a Deezer-commissioned Ipsos Digital survey fielded October 6–10, 2025, 9,000 adults aged 18–65 across eight countries took part. In the blind task, respondents heard two fully AI-generated tracks and one human-made track; 97% failed to tell the difference. That result describes this particular three-track test, not every listener or every kind of music.

- Share Audio Port: With a shared audio port, easily connect another pair to share music or videos—no splitters or special cables needed.
The survey also found that 52% of respondents felt uncomfortable that they could not tell. In the same study, 80% agreed that fully AI-generated music should be clearly labeled; among music-streaming users, 73% wanted to know when a service was recommending fully AI-generated music, and 45% wanted an option to filter it. These are the views of the survey’s participants, not proof that all listeners want the same features.
Those results are a reason to be cautious about confident claims based on supposed sonic tells. A polished or unusual sound does not prove AI involvement, and a convincing performance does not prove that no AI was used.

What music-platform labels and credits tell you
Platform signals are not interchangeable. Some describe a track’s disclosed or detected AI contribution; another may describe whether an artist profile represents a real person. They also differ in how information is supplied and what happens when it is missing.
| Service or signal | What it describes | How the information is supplied | What a missing signal means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deezer AI tags | Tracks Deezer identifies as fully AI-generated. | Deezer says it tags detected fully AI-generated music. | The cited description does not establish that an untagged track contains no AI use. |
| Spotify Song Credits | Disclosed AI contributions to a song, with contribution types such as vocals, lyrics or production. | Artists or distributors disclose the information. | Spotify says no AI credit does not mean AI was not used; disclosure depends on artists and distributors, and not all distributors enable it. |
| Spotify AI Persona badge | Whether an artist profile represents a real person—not how the music on the profile was made. | Spotify announced the badge in August 2026, with it beginning for some profiles in mid-September 2026. | The announcement does not establish that an unbadged artist is necessarily a real person. |
| YouTube music-partner metadata | Partner classifications of “Fully Gen AI,” “Partly Gen AI” or “No Gen AI.” | Music partners provide the metadata; YouTube may also use other signals. | If a partner provides no value, YouTube says it treats the status as unknown unless other signals allow a determination. |
The YouTube guidance concerns information delivered by music partners; it does not establish that every listener sees the same metadata in every YouTube product. Across services, an absent label may mean missing or unknown information rather than an affirmative declaration that a track is human-made.

What Deezer’s numbers do—and do not—show
Deezer reported that approximately 90,000 fully AI-generated tracks were arriving on its service per day, and that such tracks exceeded 50% of its daily uploads at a peak in June 2026. It also reported detecting and tagging 13.4 million AI-generated tracks in 2025. These are Deezer’s figures for its own platform, not a count of all music uploaded worldwide. Deezer says it automatically excludes tagged fully AI-generated tracks from its algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists.
In June 2025, Deezer reported that up to 70% of streams generated by fully AI-generated tracks on its platform were fraudulent, while those tracks accounted for approximately 0.5% of streams there. These are historical company-reported figures tied to Deezer and that period; they are not current estimates for the whole music industry.

How to check an unfamiliar artist or track
Use more than one kind of evidence, and keep the conclusion proportional to what you find. The Associated Press recommends checking whether an act has established social accounts, evidence of concerts or past live performances, and a release history with a label. These details can provide context, but none is a reliable test on its own: an emerging, private or virtual artist may have little conventional public history.
- Look for direct disclosure. Check the song credits, platform metadata, the artist’s own accounts and any statements from the distributor or label.
- Check the artist’s history. Look for consistent activity over time, past releases and evidence of performances, rather than treating one missing or new account as proof.
- Interpret detector results narrowly. Say that a detector flagged a track—not that the result proves the track is AI-generated. AP cautions that detectors can make mistakes; a small informal test cannot establish a tool’s overall accuracy.
- Separate track evidence from identity evidence. A profile badge about whether an artist identity is real does not tell you whether a particular track used AI, and a track credit does not by itself settle who is behind the profile.
What U.S. copyright guidance says about human input
The U.S. Copyright Office’s Part 2 report, released January 29, 2025, says generative-AI output may qualify for copyright protection when a human author determines sufficient expressive elements. Its analysis distinguishes, for example, a perceptible human-authored contribution or creative human arrangement or modification from merely entering prompts: prompts alone are not enough under the Office’s stated approach. AI assistance, or AI-generated material included in a larger human-created work, does not automatically prevent copyright protection for the larger work.

This is a U.S. copyrightability summary, not a ruling on any particular song. Copyrightable human authorship, the legality of a model’s training data, possible infringement of an existing composition or recording, authorization to use a person’s vocal likeness, and a platform’s disclosure rules are separate questions. The cited guidance does not settle a specific track’s rights or the law in other countries.
The Copyright Office’s AI overview said that a prepublication Part 3 report on generative-AI training was released May 9, 2025, with a final version still forthcoming at the time of that overview. That status should not be read as a current update to the report’s publication status.
