To use a password manager other than Chrome’s on Android, select that manager as your device’s autofill service. Bitwarden, 1Password, and Proton Pass all document this setup. The best fit depends on your Android version, browser, passkey needs, and how you plan to move saved logins—not on a verified reliability ranking. Android’s autofill provider and Chrome’s own password settings are separate configuration points, so choosing another provider does not mean avoiding Google or changing every browser setting.
Which Android password manager should you choose?
All three options below document Android system autofill setup. Their documentation explains how to enable the feature, but it does not establish which one fills logins most reliably across different phones. Compare the setup and compatibility details against the device and apps you actually use.
| Manager | What its Android instructions cover | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Bitwarden | Select Bitwarden in Android’s Autofill services. Its app supports popup or inline suggestions; its help pages also cover Chrome and Brave integration. Bitwarden Android autofill | Inline autofill requires Android 11 or later and a compatible keyboard. Check browser-specific settings, app-to-login matching, and whether you prefer popup or inline suggestions. Bitwarden cautions users to autofill only into trusted apps. |
| 1Password | Select 1Password in Android autofill settings. Its guide covers optional suggestions and additional steps for Chrome 141 or later and Brave 1.83 or later. 1Password Android autofill | Check whether your browser version needs extra configuration. Apps in Android 15 Private Space cannot use the system autofill provider, according to 1Password. Its download page says passkeys require Android 14 or later. 1Password for Android |
| Proton Pass | Select Proton Pass in Android’s Autofill service list. Its usage guide describes login suggestions, manual copy-and-paste, and importing through its browser extension. Proton Pass Android setup | Consider the browser-extension import workflow and any Proton ecosystem features you need. Proton’s guide was made using Samsung One UI and says details can vary with Android version. |
Choose by your setup and priorities
- For inline suggestions: Bitwarden documents inline autofill on Android 11 or later with a compatible keyboard. If your keyboard does not support it, popup suggestions or another method may be more suitable.
- For Chrome or Brave: Check the manager’s browser instructions after selecting it in Android settings. Bitwarden and 1Password both document additional browser-related configuration.
- For passkeys: Check the minimum Android version and the provider’s passkey instructions; those requirements are not identical to ordinary password autofill.
- For moving existing logins: Include the import process in your decision. Proton says its imports from other password managers and browsers use its browser extension.
How to set a password manager as Android’s autofill service
Menu names and locations vary between Android versions and manufacturers. Start inside your chosen manager’s autofill settings and use its link to Android’s service picker when available. If you cannot find the setting, search Android Settings for “Autofill” or “Passwords.”
- Install and sign in: Set up Bitwarden, 1Password, or Proton Pass, then save at least one test login in the app.
- Open the manager’s autofill settings: Follow its instructions to open Android’s autofill-service selection screen.
- Select the provider: Choose the manager you installed as the Android autofill service. Confirm any system prompt.
- Check browser-specific guidance: If you use Chrome or Brave, consult the provider’s current instructions for that browser. Android selection may not be the only setting needed for browser filling.
- Test two places: Open a saved login in an installed app, then test a login in the browser you use. Confirm that the suggestion matches the correct account before submitting.
If a login does not appear
- Confirm the intended manager is selected in Android’s autofill settings.
- Check the manager’s instructions for your browser and version, especially if filling fails only in Chrome or Brave.
- For Bitwarden inline suggestions, verify both Android 11-or-later compatibility and keyboard support; try popup suggestions if inline is unavailable.
- Check that the saved login is associated with the correct app or website. A manager may not match every app or site automatically.
- Use the manager’s manual fill or copy-and-paste method as a fallback if available. Proton documents opening its app and copying login values; its guide says the clipboard is cleared after 60 seconds by default. Proton Pass on Android
How Android autofill relates to Chrome
Android’s system autofill provider is a device-level choice; Chrome also has its own password-related settings. Selecting a third-party provider tells Android which service to offer for autofill, but browser behavior can involve additional configuration. That distinction is why it is worth testing both an installed app and your browser rather than assuming the system setting alone settles every case.

Using another provider for autofill does not remove Google from Android. Google’s instructions for managing passkey providers use the device setting named “Passwords, passkeys & accounts.” Android remains the system layer where a provider is selected. Google’s Android passkey instructions
Passkeys are related to, but different from, password autofill
Password autofill enters saved usernames and passwords into sign-in forms. Passkeys use a different sign-in method, and support depends on both the Android configuration and whether an app or website offers passkeys. Google says passkeys are saved and synced by a password manager, identifies third-party providers as options, and notes that not all apps and websites support them.

- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Android provider setting: Google’s path is “Passwords, passkeys & accounts.” Follow the device prompts to choose a password and passkey provider.
- Proton Pass: Proton’s Android passkey instructions require Android 14 or newer and setting Proton Pass as the default password and passkeys app. Proton Pass passkeys on Android
- Bitwarden: Its Android autofill page says its app can store and autofill passkeys. Bitwarden also states that Android does not allow third-party passkey providers such as Bitwarden to support passkey-based two-factor authentication using non-discoverable credentials. This is a specific limitation, not a statement that ordinary password autofill or all passkey use is unavailable.
- 1Password: Its Android download information lists Android 14 or later for passkeys. Check its current support material for details relevant to your device and sign-in use.
What to check before moving your passwords
Decide how you will transfer existing credentials before turning off or deleting the old store. Import paths differ: Proton says importing from other password managers and browsers is handled through its browser extension. Check the chosen provider’s current import and export instructions for your existing source, and verify that important logins are present and usable after the move.
Also check the Android version, keyboard, and browser you use—not just whether the app installs. These determine whether a particular suggestion style or browser integration is available. Manufacturer interfaces can differ; Proton’s guide specifically notes that its screenshots use Samsung One UI and that behavior may vary by Android version.

- Enhanced MFA (FIDO2 & TOTP/HOTP): Strengthen your security with flexible options. Use the Manager App to access TOTP/HOTP features for accounts that do not yet support FIDO2.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID. NFC functionality is not supported.
Security and reliability considerations
Autofill convenience does not remove the need to verify where credentials are going. Bitwarden warns that installed apps can impersonate known package names and advises autofilling only into trusted apps. Install apps from trusted sources and pause if a suggested login appears in an unexpected app or on an unfamiliar site.
Official setup guides establish supported configuration steps and stated requirements; they do not provide an independent, device-by-device comparison of autofill success rates. Treat claims that one service is universally more reliable as unproven unless they are backed by testing on the Android version, browser, and apps you use.
