Yes—you can run an AI assistant on your computer using model files stored on the device and a local runtime. That can keep the model’s prompts and responses on your machine, but “local” applies to each part of the setup: a cloud model or optional online service for documents, search, embeddings, or voice may still receive data.

What makes an AI assistant local?

A local setup has three basic parts: an interface to chat with, a runtime that loads a model, and the model’s files on your computer. For example, LM Studio lets you download model files, load a model into memory, and chat with it. The model’s weights and other parameters use computer memory while it runs. LM Studio explains its app workflow.

An interface does not determine where processing happens by itself. Open WebUI can connect to a local model server such as Ollama or llama.cpp, or to a hosted provider. In Open WebUI, the selected endpoint determines where inference—the work of generating an answer—takes place. If you choose a cloud endpoint, your message and included context go to that provider; a local endpoint runs the model on the selected local server. Open WebUI documents its endpoint and data-flow model.

Does a local assistant keep your information private?

Local inference can keep the prompt and generated response on your computer, but it does not automatically make every feature in the assistant private or offline. Check the destination for each service you enable, including cloud retrieval, embeddings, document extraction, web search, and voice processing. A tool might send a document or derived information to a provider even when the chat model itself runs locally.

Ollama’s privacy policy says: “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” That statement describes local processing with Ollama; it does not cover other software or a cloud-hosted model. The policy also says Ollama may collect limited device and usage metadata, and that prompts and responses sent to its cloud-hosted models are processed transiently. Read Ollama’s privacy policy.

  • Confirm which model endpoint receives your messages.
  • Check whether document search, embeddings, extraction, voice, or other connected tools use separate providers.
  • Review the privacy policies of the runtime, interface, and any hosted services you choose.

Can you use one offline?

Often, yes, after the required application components and model files are on your computer. LM Studio says its downloaded models run locally and can be used entirely offline; it also says chat entries and document processing for its retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflow remain on-device. But searching its model catalog, downloading models or runtimes, and checking for application updates require an internet connection. See LM Studio’s offline-use documentation.

Offline inference is narrower than an entirely offline setup. For example, an interface may offer features that need additional providers or components. Open WebUI’s installation documentation notes that some document, retrieval, and voice capabilities require extra configuration. Its quick-start guide documents installation with Docker, but installing the interface alone does not establish that all features are local. Open WebUI quick start and Open WebUI documentation.

What computer do you need?

There is no single hardware minimum for every local assistant. Requirements depend on the software, model, operating system, and the amount of memory available for the model and its context. A model that does not fit comfortably may not be a practical choice for that computer.

As product-specific guidance, LM Studio’s current requirements page lists Apple Silicon M1, M2, M3, or M4 and macOS 14 or newer. It recommends 16 GB or more of RAM for that platform; an 8 GB Mac may still work with smaller models and modest context sizes. These are LM Studio recommendations for the listed Mac configuration, not universal requirements or a guarantee that every model will work. Check LM Studio’s system requirements.

Before choosing a model, compare the software’s supported platform with your computer’s processor, operating system, available memory, model size, and intended context size. A generic “AI PC” label does not establish that a particular model and workflow will fit.

How should you choose a local assistant?

What to compare Question to ask
Where inference runs Does the selected model run on your computer, or does the interface send prompts to a hosted API?
Hardware and model fit Does your processor and operating system meet the software requirements, and is there enough memory for the model and context you want?
Offline scope After downloads, which functions work without internet, and which still need connectivity for discovery, updates, or other services?
Data paths beyond chat Do embeddings, document retrieval, extraction, web tools, or voice features use a separate provider?
Workflow Would you prefer a desktop-first application such as LM Studio, or a configurable interface such as Open WebUI connected to a model server or hosted provider?

There is no established speed or answer-quality ranking here: the cited product documentation does not provide comparable benchmarks for these options or for a particular computer. Choose based on your data boundaries, hardware, and required features, then verify the endpoint and provider for each part of the workflow.
