Downloads is a folder where files are saved; Recent files is a File Explorer view that helps you reopen files you used lately. A file can appear in Recent files even when it is stored somewhere other than Downloads—or in a cloud location. To find a download, check the browser’s save location and then browse or search the folder where it was saved.
Downloads vs. Recent files at a glance
| Question | Downloads | Recent files |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A known Windows folder and a storage location. | A File Explorer view that surfaces files based on recent use. |
| What determines what appears? | Whether a file is saved in that folder. | Whether a file was used recently. |
| Best for | Browsing or searching for downloaded files saved there. | Returning to a file you recently opened. |
| Does it store a separate copy? | Yes, files saved there are stored in the folder. | No. Recent files is a listing, not a separate storage folder. |
For Microsoft’s explanation of File Explorer Home, known folders, Quick access, and privacy settings, see File Explorer in Windows.
How to open the Downloads folder
- Open File Explorer from the taskbar or Start, or press Windows logo key + E.
- Select Downloads in Home or the navigation pane.
Microsoft says that beginning with Windows 11 version 22H2, known folders such as Downloads are available as pinned folders in File Explorer Home and the left navigation pane. Placement and visibility can vary with settings or device configuration.
If Downloads is not visible
In File Explorer, open Home and select the Up arrow to display known folders. Right-click Downloads and choose Pin to Quick access.

How to find a file in Downloads or Recent files
Search Downloads for a downloaded file
Open Downloads first, then search from inside that folder. This limits the search to that location. If you do not know where a file was saved, search more broadly in File Explorer or Windows. Microsoft says searching This PC is slower but more in-depth than searching Home. Its guidance is in Find your files and apps in Windows.
Use Recent files to reopen something
Look in File Explorer Home or Quick access for files surfaced by recent use. The listing can include items stored in other folders or cloud locations. Seeing a file there does not establish that it was downloaded or that it is in Downloads.

If a downloaded file is missing
- Check the browser’s download location. Browsers can be configured to save files in different places; they do not all necessarily use the Windows Downloads folder.
- For Microsoft Edge, open Settings > Downloads and inspect Location. The path is configurable. Microsoft gives
C:Users[your name]Downloadsas an example, not a guaranteed path for every user or browser. See Find where your browser is saving downloads. - Search the confirmed folder. If you cannot identify the save location, use a broader File Explorer or Windows search instead.
- Review Storage Sense if an older download is gone. Windows can be configured to delete files in Downloads that have not been opened for a selected period. Microsoft says Downloads are not managed by Storage Sense unless that deletion period is configured. Check Manage drive space with Storage Sense.
Can you hide Recent files?
Yes. Open File Explorer Options and clear the recent-file and frequent-folder options under Privacy. This changes what File Explorer displays; it does not move files or turn Recent files into a storage folder. Downloads remains a separate navigation destination. Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance covers these controls.
Removing an item from a recent or Quick access listing is not the same as deleting the underlying file. Use the file’s actual folder if you intend to manage or delete the file itself.
