How should you wash a golf polo?
- Check the care label. The garment’s own instructions take priority because fabric blends and finishes differ.
- Use a gentle cycle and cold water if the label allows. TaylorMade lists cold, gentle machine washing for its Crosswind Polo II, which is 90% polyester and 10% stretch fabric. - Choose detergent and additives to match the label. HEAD Golf recommends mild detergent and says to avoid bleach and harsh chemicals. SanMar’s Sport-Tek PosiCharge tri-blend instructions allow non-chlorine bleach only when needed and say not to use fabric softener. How do you reduce the risk of shrinking or losing shape?
Keep drying heat low rather than assuming every performance polo can take a hot dryer. TaylorMade specifies low tumble drying for the Crosswind Polo II; HEAD Golf allows low tumble drying or line drying for its Signature Polo. SanMar also specifies low tumble drying for its cited tri-blend. Use the option permitted by your garment’s label. Line drying is an alternative where the label permits it. These are prudent care steps based on maker instructions, not a quantified promise that a polo will never shrink or change shape. The cited sources do not provide controlled measurements of shrinkage or shape retention.
How can you help prevent fading?
Avoid bleach unless your polo’s label specifically permits a suitable type. HEAD Golf advises avoiding bleach and harsh chemicals; SanMar’s tri-blend instructions permit non-chlorine bleach only when needed and recommend washing with like colors. Some fabrics have a fade-resistant attribute, but that does not make them immune to wear or poor care. SanMar defines “fade-resistant” as “Decreases color-fading effects of sunlight or normal wear and tear.” Its definition describes an attribute, not a guarantee for every polo. How should you protect an embroidered logo?
Turning a polo inside out and placing an embroidered one in a mesh laundry bag are optional friction-reduction tips from a secondary golf-polo care article. The same article recommends gentle washing and low dryer heat or air drying. Can a “shrink-resistant” polo still shrink?
“Shrink-resistant” describes fabric “Fabricated to minimize the shrinking of a garment during regular washing and drying,” according to SanMar. “Minimize” does not mean eliminate: keep following the garment’s care label, especially its washing and drying instructions.
