You can build a Raspberry Pi console that reads certain original game discs, but it will not play every disc from every console. The clearest documented starting point is a Raspberry Pi 4 running 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS, paired with an internally powered SATA DVD drive connected through an externally powered USB adapter or enclosure. Whether a particular game works depends on the emulator and platform, not just the drive.
What this build can—and cannot—do
This is a small computer configured to let compatible emulators read original optical discs. It is not a universal replacement for disc-based consoles, and adding a DVD drive does not make every CD or DVD game playable. The emulator must support direct disc reading and the console generation you want to emulate. A Raspberry Pi project guide documents a Raspberry Pi 4 and 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS setup for this purpose, but compatibility is selective. Read the Raspberry Pi Official Magazine project guide.
Plan around a specific game and emulator before buying parts. A generic retro-gaming operating system or a Blu-ray drive does not guarantee original-disc support; the project guide notes that Blu-ray spin-up and spin-down behavior can be a poor fit for some emulated consoles.
Core parts for the documented approach

Choose a drive connection that can supply power
For this build, the practical choice is an internal SATA DVD drive plus an externally powered SATA-to-USB adapter or drive enclosure. Do not assume a bus-powered portable USB optical drive will behave as reliably: the project guide warns that some modern portable drives may demand more power than the Pi readily supplies and may not work well with hubs or external 5 V adapters. That is an integration caution, not a claim that every USB optical drive fails.

- Check that the drive is SATA if you are buying an adapter or enclosure for an internal drive.
- Confirm that the adapter or enclosure has its own mains power provision.
- Keep the drive’s power path distinct from the Pi’s recommended power supply.
- Choose based on whether your intended emulator can read the target disc directly; the connector alone cannot establish compatibility.
Set up the Pi and connect the hardware
- Install a fresh 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS image on the microSD card. This is the operating system specified by the documented disc-based build.
- Connect the display to a micro-HDMI port on the Raspberry Pi 4, then attach the Pi’s suitable power supply and complete initial operating-system setup.
- Connect the SATA DVD drive to the externally powered USB adapter or enclosure, provide its external power, and connect its USB lead to the Pi.
- Connect a USB controller and configure the emulator for the console and game you intend to use.
- Insert an original disc only after confirming that the selected emulator supports direct optical-disc reading for that platform.
Check emulator, BIOS, and multi-disc requirements
Direct disc access is emulator-specific. Some emulators may also require BIOS files. The project guide’s UK-focused emulator selection limits itself to software that can read discs and use a High Level Emulation BIOS; that is a constraint of its selection, not a universal rule for every emulator.
Multi-disc games can involve a separate software configuration issue. Raspberry Pi’s disc-mounting article explains that Bookworm’s default automount places inserted discs in uniquely named, non-permanent directories. Some emulators, including PCSXR and some DOSBox-family programs, expect each disc in a set to be available through the same path when swapping discs. If swapping fails, check the emulator’s path expectations and the operating system’s mount behavior rather than assuming the optical drive itself is incompatible. Legal considerations depend on where you live
The project guide gives UK-specific advice: it says UK law does not permit copying purchased software, video, or music discs for backup or transcoding, and that console game EULAs do not grant personal-copy permission. It also cautions against downloading disc images made by someone else or console BIOS files. Those statements are not a worldwide legal summary; readers elsewhere should check the law that applies in their jurisdiction.
