For a strict standing barbell overhead press, set the bar at upper-chest height, brace your trunk, and press the bar up and slightly back until it is over your center of gravity. Keep your torso and legs rigid, then lower the bar under control to your shoulders.
Set up the bar and lifting area
- Clear the area. Remove anything you could trip over and make sure you have room to unrack and press.
- Set the rack. Place the bar on the hooks at upper-chest height, so you can lift it out without an exaggerated squat or reaching. The CSCCa barbell overhead press guide recommends chest-height safety straps when the lift is performed inside a full rack.
- Take your stance and grip. Stand with feet about hip-width apart and toes forward. Grip the bar just outside shoulder width.
- Set your starting position. Unrack the bar to your shoulders. Keep your elbows under your wrists, with your forearms roughly vertical. Brace your abdominal wall and inhale before pressing. The CSCCa guide also cues scapular retraction; treat that as its setup instruction, not a position that must look identical for every lifter.
Press the bar overhead
- Keep your trunk and lower body rigid. A strict press uses the upper body, not a dip or leg drive.
- Press the bar upward and slightly back as you extend your elbows. The bar needs to travel around your head; move your head out of its path, then bring it back under the bar as it passes.
- Finish with your elbows extended and the bar over your center of gravity. The CSCCa guide cues exhaling after the bar clears the sticking point.
Lower it under control
Bring the bar back to your shoulders in a controlled manner, returning to the starting position. Do not drop it or let your body lose its brace during the descent.
Common form errors
- Elbows drift outward: Reset with elbows under wrists and forearms roughly vertical rather than letting the elbows flare away from the bar’s line of support.
- You bend your knees or drive through your legs: That turns the lift into a leg-assisted variation, such as a push press, rather than the strict press described here. Keep your lower body still for a strict rep.
- The bar finishes forward of you: Press up and slightly back so the lockout is over your center of gravity, not out in front.
- You lose control on the way down: Reduce the load if needed and practice returning the bar to your shoulders under control.
Equipment and safety
The exercise requires a barbell; a rack is useful for setting the starting height. If you use a full rack, the CSCCa guide recommends safety straps at chest height. It states that the barbell overhead press does not require a spotter, but that is the guide’s recommendation for its exercise description—not a universal rule for every load, lifter, or training setup. The NSCA position statements and its Basics of Strength and Conditioning Manual discuss broader strength-training considerations such as competent supervision, stable positioning, appropriate resistance, movement speed, and range of motion. Those general principles are not a guarantee that any single cue prevents injury.
If you cannot stabilize a load overhead, do not force the rep; use an appropriate regression or get qualified coaching. The NSCA manual includes dumbbell shoulder raises in a broader progression for athletes unable to stabilize a weight overhead. If you have pain, an injury history, or a relevant medical condition, the sources cited here do not establish individualized medical guidance.

How the strict press differs from other overhead exercises
The CSCCa guide lists seated, one-arm, and alternating dumbbell presses, the landmine press, push jerk, and split jerk as variations. They differ in equipment, stance, whether the movement is one-arm or bilateral, and whether leg drive is used. Push jerks and split jerks deliberately use leg drive; they are not strict barbell presses. The cited sources do not establish that one variation produces better outcomes than another.
