Android’s Find Hub network can help locate a lost phone, accessory or compatible tracker tag when a participating Android device detects it nearby over Bluetooth. That device sends an encrypted location report to Find Hub; the tag does not calculate or transmit a GPS location of its own. Google says the item’s location is end-to-end encrypted, but its service still processes some supporting data, and your network setting affects how broadly nearby devices can help.

How Find Hub locates an item

  1. A participating Android phone or tablet scans for nearby items using Bluetooth.
  2. If it detects a compatible lost device or tag, it securely sends Find Hub the location where the detection happened. The participating device can also help other owners by detecting their missing items.
  3. The owner requests the item’s location in Find Hub. The app shows a reported location and approximately when the item was last seen. Google says the owner does not receive other information about the devices that detected it.
  4. Depending on the item and settings, Find Hub may show a device’s current location when it is online, an encrypted recent location stored on the device, or encrypted locations reported by the crowdsourced network.

This is Bluetooth-based proximity finding: a nearby participating device notices the item and reports where it saw it. It is not the tracker independently calculating its position with GPS.

Can Google see the item’s location?

Google describes item locations reported through the network as end-to-end encrypted. Each item location is protected by a unique key that the owner accesses using the device’s screen-lock PIN, pattern or password. Google says it cannot identify a participating device when that device shares the location of an item it detects. These are Google’s descriptions of the system; they are not an independent audit of its cryptography or implementation. See Google’s explanation of Find Hub privacy and security.

Encryption of item locations does not mean Find Hub processes no other data. Google says the service processes supporting information such as temporary device identifiers, timestamps for item detections and location requests, and information about paired or shared Fast Pair accessories.

Choose how broadly nearby devices can help

Find Hub offers four offline-finding choices. The setting affects both whether your device contributes to network finding and how it may get help locating your own items.

Setting What it does Coverage and requirements
Off Does not store encrypted recent locations or participate in the crowdsourced network. Online device finding and finding connected Fast Pair accessories can still work.
Without network Keeps encrypted recent locations for your device and connected accessories, without using crowdsourced network reports for tracker tags or other items. Does not use the broader network to find items.
With network in busy places only Uses aggregated detections in busy areas. Find Hub waits for multiple Android devices to detect an item and calculates an aggregated location. Aims to help in places such as airports or busy footpaths. A PIN, pattern or password is needed for network help finding your own items.
With network everywhere Can use detections in busy and remote areas, including a report from a single participating device. Offers broader potential coverage; a screen lock is needed for network help finding your own items.

Google presents busy-places aggregation as a privacy measure: multiple detections contribute to the reported location instead of relying on one device’s report. Everywhere mode can use a single report, including in a remote area. The tradeoff is broader potential coverage versus the aggregation behavior Google describes for busy-places mode. Details are in Google’s Find Hub network settings guidance.

  • Your Privacy, Fully Protected: Certified by Apple MFi, this Bluetooth Air Tracker Tag uses end-to-end encryption to keep your location data private and secure. All communications are anonymous and encrypted, and no location data is stored on the device. Even if your item is lost, your information remains protected and cannot be accessed without your permission — not by Apple, the manufacturer, or any third party.

Set up offline finding on Android

  1. Open the device’s Settings and find the Google Find Hub or offline-finding settings. Menu names and paths vary by phone and Android version.
  2. Choose an offline-finding option: Off, Without network, With network in busy places only, or With network everywhere.
  3. For network help finding your own items, set a screen lock using a PIN, pattern or password.
  4. Make sure Location is enabled, the device is allowed to be located, and it is visible in Google Play. Google recommends these checks when preparing a device for finding.

Google says devices running Android 8.0 or lower cannot participate in the broader crowdsourced network, although encrypted recent locations can still be stored for the device and connected accessories. On supported devices such as the Pixel 8 series, Find Hub can locate the phone for several hours after it is turned off or its battery runs out, but only when offline finding is set to Busy places only or Everywhere and Bluetooth and Location were enabled when the phone shut down. This turned-off finding capability is not established for all Android phones. See Google’s device preparation and offline-finding requirements.

Which items can Find Hub locate?

Find Hub supports Android phones and tablets, compatible Fast Pair accessories such as some earbuds, and compatible tracker tags attached to items such as keys, wallets or bikes. Compatibility depends on the exact accessory or tag model. Check its product listing or manufacturer documentation for explicit Find Hub support before buying; a brand’s participation in the ecosystem does not establish that every product it sells is compatible.

Google’s May 10, 2023 announcement named Tile, Chipolo and Pebblebee as tracker makers joining the then-named Find My Device ecosystem. It also discussed future updates for Pixel Buds and headphones from Sony and JBL. Those are historical examples, not a current or complete model-by-model compatibility list. Google’s current guidance says a Find Hub-compatible tag is required to share a tagged item’s location: Find Hub accessory and tag guidance.

Secure a lost device or share an item’s location

Secure or erase an Android device

Find Hub can help locate, secure or erase a lost Android device. Google lists these requirements for remote securing or erasure: the device has power, mobile data or Wi-Fi, is signed in to a Google Account, has Find Hub enabled and is visible in Google Play. A network location report does not by itself guarantee that remote locking or erasure will work. See Google’s requirements for finding, securing and erasing a device.

Share access to a tag or its location

Owners can share an accessory or tracker tag with up to 10 loved ones. They can also share a lost tagged item’s location through a link, for example with an airline. Google says updated reporting requires one of the owner’s devices to be online.

The link is still encrypted, but it adds a key that anyone signed in to a Google Account who visits the link can access. A recipient may also see contact details if the item is marked lost. The link expires automatically after seven days, and the owner can stop sharing sooner. Treat the link as access for anyone who obtains it, not as information visible only to the owner. Details are in Google’s item-sharing guidance.

What the network’s size claim does—and does not—tell you

Google’s May 10, 2023 announcement said the planned Find My Device network would harness more than a billion Android devices worldwide. That is a dated company announcement, not a current count of active participants or a measure of how often a particular item will be detected. The announcement’s engineering vice president Erik Kay wrote that network-crowdsourced location data is end-to-end encrypted; Google’s current Help guidance also describes supporting data processing and the different participation settings.
