To give a refurbished iPhone the best chance of receiving several more years of iOS updates, choose the newest model that fits your budget and needs, then verify its battery condition and the seller’s warranty and return terms. As of Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guidance, published September 21, 2026, iPhone 11 and later named models and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later) support iOS 26. That is a current-compatibility check—not a promise of how many future iOS versions any model will receive.

Start with Apple’s current compatibility list

Use current compatibility as a minimum filter: a phone that does not run the current iOS release is already behind on major-version support. Apple’s September 21, 2026 iOS 26 compatibility guidance names iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 models, iPhone Air, and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later).

Check the exact model, not just the family name in a listing. Compatibility can vary by feature, region, language, and carrier, and Apple does not publish a model-by-model schedule of future major iOS releases. A phone on the iOS 26 list runs iOS 26; its presence there does not establish how many years of updates remain.

Use generation as a longevity guide, not a guarantee

Among phones that meet your needs, a newer generation is generally the more cautious choice for future software support. Apple’s 2024 environmental report says feature OS updates historically extended as far back as six years from a device’s original release. That is historical context, not a promised support term for any refurbished model.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Consider the age of the phone at purchase as well as its current compatibility. Two models may both run iOS 26, but the newer one is the more sensible pick if your priority is maximizing the chance of additional future releases. Decide how much that extra potential is worth against the complete offer: price, storage, condition, and the features you actually use.

Check the battery separately from software support

Software eligibility says nothing about how long a used phone will last between charges. Apple’s Battery Health screen reports maximum capacity relative to when the battery was new and peak performance capability. A battery can be worn even when the iPhone remains eligible for iOS updates.

Rank #2
Apple iPhone 12, 64GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
  • Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
  • Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

What Apple’s cycle figures mean

Apple says batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, and batteries in iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles. Both figures apply under ideal conditions, not as a promise about an individual refurbished device; actual capacity depends on use and charging.

For iPhone 15 and later, Settings may show cycle count and battery manufacture or first-use details, depending on the model and software. Do not assume these details will be available on every iPhone. A seller’s stated battery condition is useful only if the listing explains what was checked and what remedy applies if the battery falls short.

Compare refurbishment terms, not just the grade

“Refurbished” does not establish a consistent battery standard, parts history, warranty, or return window across sellers. Read the specific listing and terms before paying, including what happens if the phone arrives activation-locked, carrier-locked, or with undisclosed parts or battery issues.

Check What to confirm
Battery Whether it is new, tested, or merely reported at a stated capacity; how battery warnings or poor performance are handled.
Parts and function Whether parts are disclosed and what functional testing was performed.
Warranty Duration, coverage, exclusions, and who handles a claim.
Returns Return window, conditions, and whether a refund or exchange is available.
Lock status and listing details Whether the phone is unlocked for your carrier, and whether the grade and included accessories are clearly stated.

Apple’s Certified Refurbished iOS-device description says devices receive a new battery and outer shell, full functional testing, and a one-year limited warranty. The cited Apple refurbished iPhone 16e listing also specifies a 14-day return policy. These are terms for Apple’s program and that listing, not a standard that applies to third-party sellers or every market; check the current offer for your region at Apple Certified Refurbished.

Know the difference between service and iOS updates

Apple says service and parts may be available for at least five years after it last distributed a product, and sometimes longer or up to seven years subject to parts availability. This is hardware service guidance, not a commitment to provide iOS updates for the same period. Treat repair availability and software support as separate considerations when choosing a used phone.

Use this buying checklist

  1. Identify the exact model and generation. Do not rely on a broad family label; ask for the precise model if the listing does not provide it.
  2. Compare it with Apple’s latest compatibility list. Confirm current iOS eligibility using Apple’s iOS 26 guidance.
  3. Ask about battery condition and parts. Get the reported battery health, any battery or parts warnings, and the seller’s remedy in writing.
  4. Verify lock status. Confirm the phone is activation-unlocked and compatible with your carrier; confirm it is carrier-unlocked if you need to use another network.
  5. Read warranty and return terms. Check the time limits, exclusions, and process for a return or repair.
  6. Check the whole offer. Compare storage, condition, included accessories, and price alongside the model’s age and features—not generation alone.
  7. Inspect the phone promptly after delivery. Check its model and battery information before the return window closes.
