To check whether your iPhone is still getting iOS updates, find its exact model in Settings > General > About, then check Settings > General > Software Update. Compare the model with Apple’s current compatibility list, too: “Up to Date” means no update is being offered to that phone at the moment, not necessarily that it can run the newest major iOS version.
Find your iPhone model and installed iOS version

Open Settings and tap General.

Tap About. Note the model name and iOS version shown there. If you need to distinguish variants, tap the model number to reveal the model number identifier.
Use the model name—not just the phone’s age or installed version—to check compatibility. Apple’s iPhone User Guide compatibility list is the reference for which models can run the latest iOS version. As of October 4, 2026, Apple lists iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation) and iPhone SE (3rd generation), as compatible with iOS 27. The live list can change with future releases. Apple also notes that features may vary by model, region, language, and carrier.

Go to Settings > General > Software Update. The screen shows the installed iOS version and whether an update is available.

If an update is offered, tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen instructions.

Apple’s iOS 27 download instructions also describe automatic updates. Find the controls at Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Depending on the options you enable, the iPhone can download updates automatically or install them overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi.
What “Your iPhone is up to date” actually means
It means Software Update is not currently offering another update to that iPhone. It does not prove that the phone supports the latest major iOS release. Apple’s compatibility list answers which major version a model can run; the Software Update screen reports what is available to install on that device. Check both.

Major iOS compatibility and security updates are separate questions. Apple publishes updates for older iOS branches as well as current ones, so an iPhone may receive a security update without being compatible with the newest major iOS. For example, Apple’s release table lists iOS 27.0.1 and iOS 26.7.1 for iPhone 11 and later, both dated September 28, 2026, and iOS 18.7.10 for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, dated August 17, 2026. These are dated releases, not a promise that each model will receive future updates or every branch listed. Check Apple’s security releases page for the current record.
If no update appears
First confirm the model against Apple’s compatibility list and check that the phone is connected to the internet. If an update still does not appear, Apple documents checking for and installing an update with a connected Mac or Windows computer in its update guide. Follow the instructions for your computer and back up the iPhone before updating.

How to judge whether support has ended
Use these checks rather than relying on a single iOS version number:

Can the model run the current major iOS? Look up the exact model in Apple’s compatibility guide.

Has Apple issued a security update for the branch it can run? Check Apple’s dated security release table.

Is an update available now? Check the phone’s Software Update screen, or use Apple’s computer-based method if needed.
Apple’s April 14, 2026 security advisory said, “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” That statement appeared in an advisory about specific web attacks; it is not a guarantee about how long any iPhone model will be supported. Apple’s published compatibility lists and dated releases establish current availability, not a fixed number of future support years.
