Back it up, connect it to power and Wi-Fi, and check Settings > General > Software Update. If nothing appears, try updating with a computer, then check Apple’s security-release list for the latest version compatible with your exact model. An older iPhone may still receive security updates even when it cannot run the newest major iOS.
Find out whether your iPhone is eligible for another update
Check the model and installed iOS version
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Note the model name and the iOS version shown on the page.
- Compare the model with the eligible devices listed beside releases on Apple’s security releases page. Check the page again when making your decision because its entries change over time.
Not being eligible for the newest major iOS does not necessarily mean updates have ended. Apple can release security updates for an older iOS branch, so look for a listed release that applies to your model rather than relying only on the number of the latest major version.
For a dated reference, Apple’s Canada security-release page lists iOS 27.0.1 and iOS 26.7.1, both released September 28, 2026, for iPhone 11 and later. This is a snapshot of the page on October 4, 2026, not a promise of future support or a substitute for checking the current listing.
Try the normal update steps before assuming support has ended
Update from the iPhone
- Back up your iPhone.
- Connect it to power and a Wi-Fi network.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and follow the onscreen instructions if an update is offered.
Try updating with a computer
If the update does not appear on the iPhone, Apple recommends trying a computer. Follow Apple’s instructions for updating your iPhone or iPad with a computer. Apple’s iOS 26 download instructions also describe backing up before an update and list devices compatible with iOS 26; use the security-release page, not that iOS 26 article, to check current iOS 27 eligibility.

Check whether a compatible security update is available
Use Apple’s release list to find the latest entry that names your model or model range. If it lists a newer compatible release, install that version even if it belongs to an older iOS branch. Apple advises users to install the latest compatible update; the fact that a phone cannot move to the newest major release alone does not establish that it has no security updates left.
Apple has reported web-based attacks that targeted out-of-date iOS versions through malicious web content. In that specific attack context, Apple said devices running up-to-date software were not at risk, described updates for older branches, and advised users unable to update to enable Lockdown Mode if available. This does not mean every outdated iPhone is compromised or that every unsupported phone faces the same immediate threat.

Protect an iPhone that cannot install an update
- Install any compatible update. Check Apple’s release list and apply the newest version it identifies for your model.
- Consider Lockdown Mode if it is available. Apple presents it as a possible protection for people who cannot update. It is a limited mitigation, not a replacement for installing software updates and not a guarantee of safety.
- Be deliberate about sensitive use. If the phone no longer has suitable security updates, take that into account when deciding whether to continue using it for sensitive accounts or daily tasks.
Apple’s advice is that “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.”

Base the decision on whether Apple lists a current compatible security release for the exact model, whether you can install it through Settings or a computer, and whether Lockdown Mode is available. Also consider the phone’s condition, whether it still meets your needs, and the cost of replacement. Those practical factors depend on your circumstances; there is no universal replacement deadline established by Apple’s update guidance.

Replacement is a stronger option when Apple lists no suitable security updates for your model and you rely on the phone for sensitive accounts or everyday use. If an older branch still receives a compatible security update, you do not need to replace the phone solely because it cannot install the newest major iOS. Compare supported iPhone models against your budget and requirements before choosing a replacement.
