To set up a Moto Tag 2, use an Android phone running Android 9 or later, enable Bluetooth and internet access, then wake the tag near your unlocked phone and tap Connect when Google Fast Pair appears. After setup, select the tag in Google Find Hub to see its location, find it nearby, or make it ring.
What you need before pairing
- An Android phone running Android 9 or later.
- An internet connection and Bluetooth enabled on the phone.
- A Google account signed in on the phone for the full Google Fast Pair flow.
- The Find Hub app installed. When asked, allow it to find and connect to nearby devices and determine their relative position while you use the app.
Motorola notes that viewing a tag’s location may require you to sign in or enter your phone’s screen lock. Basic pairing does not require UWB or other enhanced nearby-finding features.
Pair the Moto Tag 2 with your Android phone
- Unlock your phone, confirm Bluetooth and internet access are on, and keep the phone nearby.
- If the tag is new, gently pull out its protective film. The tag powers on and beeps.
- Wait for the Fast Pair prompt on your phone, then tap Connect.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to finish setup. If prompted to install the Moto Tag app, do so; if no prompt appears, get it from Motorola’s Moto Tag app page or Google Play.
After pairing, Motorola says the tag’s current location appears on the Find Hub map. The tag should be listed in both Find Hub and the Moto Tag app; use Find Hub as the main place to select and locate it.
If Google Fast Pair does not appear
- If you dismissed the prompt, wait up to five minutes, then press the tag’s button once to activate Fast Pair again.
- If setup still does not start, check for an update to Google Play services, as Motorola recommends.
- Confirm the phone is online, Bluetooth is on, and you are signed in to a Google account. Keep the phone unlocked and close to the awake tag while trying again.
Motorola’s illustrated Google Play services settings route uses Android 16 on a Motorola phone. Menu names and locations can differ on other Android phones, so use your phone’s settings search if you cannot find the update option.

Find the tag in Google Find Hub
- Open Find Hub on the paired phone and select the Moto Tag 2 from the device list.
- Use the map to check its location. If it is nearby, choose Find nearby for a proximity indication or Play sound to ring the tag.
- If it cannot be located nearby, the map may show its last known location. You can request directions, mark the tag lost to receive a notice if the Find Hub network detects it, and add contact information for someone who finds it.
Network-assisted location is not guaranteed real-time tracking. Participating Android devices scan for nearby items over Bluetooth and securely report detections to Find Hub; whether a location update is available depends on a participating device detecting the tag.
Nearby-finding features and phone compatibility
Basic setup is distinct from enhanced nearby finding. Motorola lists Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth Channel Sounding, and Ultra-wideband (UWB) among the Moto Tag 2’s nearby-finding technologies. The phone must support the relevant technology for its associated feature to work.

| Finding capability | Phone requirement stated by Motorola or Google | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pairing | Android 9 or later; internet, Bluetooth, and a Google account for full Fast Pair functionality (Motorola) | Pair the tag and access it in Find Hub; enhanced ranging hardware is not a basic pairing prerequisite. |
| UWB nearby finding | UWB-capable Android phone running Android 12 or later, with UWB enabled; availability varies by region (Motorola) | Enhanced nearby finding on supported combinations. Google lists selected Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, and Motorola Edge/Razr devices; support is not universal. |
| Bluetooth Channel Sounding | Supported phone with Bluetooth 6.0 and Android 16 or later (Motorola) | Enhanced nearby finding only on supported phone and tag combinations. |
UWB availability and performance vary by tag and phone model, according to Google’s tracker-tag support information. A phone that meets the Android version requirement is not necessarily UWB-capable.
Allow the tag’s own location setting
Motorola gives this Android 16 example for enabling the tag’s location setting: Settings > Google > All services > Find Hub > Allow device to be located. The route may differ by phone, so search Settings for Find Hub if those labels do not match.

Remove or reset a Moto Tag 2
Remove it from your account
- In Find Hub, select the tag and choose Remove from Find Hub.
- Motorola says the tag is usually removed from the phone’s Bluetooth list automatically. If it remains, open the phone’s saved Bluetooth devices and forget or remove it there.
Reset it before pairing again
- First remove the tag from Find Hub and the phone’s Bluetooth settings to help prevent pairing conflicts.
- Press the tag button once, then immediately press and hold it for five seconds until you hear a beep.
- A second beep indicates that the reset is complete. Resetting clears the tag’s configuration.
Battery, carrying, and safe use
The Moto Tag 2 uses a user-replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. Motorola’s 2025 product-page estimate is over 600 days, based on the median user under optimal network conditions; actual battery life varies with temperature, battery condition, usage, and other factors. This is a manufacturer estimate, not an independently verified runtime result. See Motorola’s Moto Tag 2 product page.
A carrying case can attach the tag to items such as keys, wallets, bags, luggage, or electronic devices. Motorola advises choosing a case open on both sides so it does not block the button or reduce buzzer volume. The guide does not establish a universal fit list for third-party cases.
Google says tracker tags are intended to help locate belongings such as keys and luggage, and advises against using them to track pets or locate stolen items. See Google’s guidance on tracker tags.
