To get more work between charges, choose an M18 battery with enough amp-hour capacity for the tool and task. Then manage swaps and charging so downtime is less disruptive. Storage and other care habits can help preserve battery life, but they cannot guarantee a fixed increase in runtime on a charge.
How to get more runtime from an M18 battery
Choose capacity for the job
A higher-capacity pack is the most direct way to increase the energy available between charges. Milwaukee lists its M18 XC5.0 pack, model 48-11-1850, at 5.0 amp-hours. Milwaukee also claims up to 2.5 times the runtime of standard lithium-ion batteries for this pack; that is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent result or a promise for every tool and task. Check the current M18 XC5.0 product page for compatibility and product details.
Capacity is only one part of the choice. A larger pack may add size and weight, and a demanding tool or workload can use charge quickly. Consider the tool’s compatibility, how much power the task requires, the pack’s physical trade-offs, and whether you can keep a spare charged. There is no single reliable runtime figure for all M18 tools.
Match the pack family to the workload
Milwaukee describes M18 HIGH OUTPUT batteries as providing 50% more power and running 50% cooler than standard M18 REDLITHIUM batteries. Those are Milwaukee’s comparisons, not a guarantee that every compatible tool will run longer per charge. Consider HIGH OUTPUT when its stated power and thermal characteristics suit the tool and workload, and confirm compatibility in current manufacturer documentation. See Milwaukee’s battery information.

Plan swaps and charging around the work
Use the fuel gauge to plan, not predict minutes
The M18 fuel gauge gives an approximate indication of remaining charge. Use it to decide when to bring over a spare or pause for a swap; do not treat it as a precise minutes-remaining display. Check the specific pack’s instructions for gauge details. Milwaukee’s manuals and downloads can help you find product documentation.
Keep a compatible spare charging
A compatible charger can reduce the time you spend waiting between packs. It changes charging turnaround, not the energy a battery can supply on one charge. Verify that the charger is compatible with the pack and follow the relevant manuals for charging instructions. Milwaukee lists the FORGE HD12.0 at 12 amp-hours, but a higher capacity does not by itself establish how long a particular tool will run; check tool compatibility and pack details on the FORGE HD12.0 product page.

Store and care for packs as Milwaukee advises
When a battery is idle, Milwaukee recommends storing it at room temperature and away from moisture. Follow the operating, charging, and storage instructions for your exact pack rather than assuming one rule covers every model. Milwaukee describes temperature management and individual-cell monitoring as features that support battery life. Those features should not be confused with a guaranteed increase in runtime per charge.

What to compare before choosing a pack
- Amp-hour rating: Higher capacity can provide more energy between charges, but does not translate into a universal number of minutes, cuts, or fasteners.
- Size and weight: Consider the added bulk and weight for the tool and work position.
- Compatibility: Confirm the pack works with the specific M18 tool and charger using current Milwaukee documentation.
- Workload: Runtime depends on the tool and how demanding the work is; Milwaukee’s product comparisons are not task-by-task independent tests.
- Workflow: A spare and compatible charger can reduce interruptions, even though charging equipment does not extend a pack’s runtime on one charge.
