Include access and waiting time, transfers, parking or drop-off, the final walk, cost, reliability, the return trip, and how many days you must be in the office. Seattle and Bellevue alone are not enough information to determine which commute is better.
Start with the same assumptions for both offers
Make the comparison about your likely routine, not a hypothetical trip between downtowns. Use your home location and each actual worksite, then apply the same workday assumptions to both jobs.
- Origin and destination: Use your actual home and office addresses or the closest practical points if you are not comfortable sharing exact addresses with a routing service.
- Arrival and departure: Enter the time you need to be at work, not simply a typical morning rush-hour time. Include your expected departure time for the return journey.
- Weekday and attendance: Compare the same weekday and the same number of required in-office days. If attendance varies, calculate the effect of the actual schedule rather than assuming five office days.
- Modes: Compare only realistic choices for you, such as transit, driving, or a drive-and-transit combination. Note whether you would actually use each option in bad weather or after a long workday.
For each option, estimate the entire trip from leaving home to reaching your work area. A train or driving segment by itself is not a commute estimate: include getting to a stop or parking, waiting, transfers, walking from the station or parking area, and any time needed to enter the building.
Compare the parts that affect the decision
Record the same measures for each offer so that a fast-looking route does not conceal extra cost, a difficult transfer, or a schedule mismatch.

| Measure | What to include |
|---|---|
| Door-to-door time | Home departure to workplace arrival, including access, waiting, transfers, parking or drop-off, and the final walk. |
| Arrival-time fit | Whether the itinerary gets you there before your real start time, with enough margin for ordinary variation. |
| Total cost | Transit fares, parking, tolls where applicable, fuel, and any employer contribution. Use the same number of office days for both jobs. |
| Reliability and recovery | How often service runs, how sensitive the route is to a missed connection, and what alternate route you could use during a disruption. |
| Schedule flexibility | Whether the route works for early starts, late finishes, overtime, and the trip home under current service hours. |
| Office pattern | Required in-person days and any flexibility that materially changes how often you make the trip. |
Use a normal weekday and a separate disruption scenario. For the latter, consider a missed connection, service interruption, unusually difficult drive, or a late departure that changes which options are available. Do not combine the best-case time for one offer with an ordinary estimate for the other.
Use current transit information for the actual addresses
Seattle and Bellevue now have a cross-lake Link rail connection. Sound Transit opened the Crosslake Connection on March 28, 2026; the 2 Line crosses Lake Washington and connects with the 1 Line at International District/Chinatown. Sound Transit’s opening announcement describes the network change.

That connection makes older assumptions about cross-lake transit potentially outdated, but it does not establish your trip time. Sound Transit reported trains approximately every eight minutes at peak at the new stations and every 10–15 minutes at other times when the full connection opened. Those are agency-reported service intervals, not a guarantee for a particular itinerary or door-to-door arrival. Check the current station schedule, route information, and alerts for your travel time using Sound Transit’s trip-planning and rider information.
Bus routes and their connections matter too. Sound Transit’s March 2026 service-change notice said ST Express routes would continue on existing routes and schedules until October 2026. For a commute evaluated after that point, confirm the current bus route and timetable rather than relying on that earlier notice or a planning document. The agency’s March 2026 service-change announcement and 2 Line information provide context; use live information for the day and time you need.

For a transit itinerary, check the complete sequence from home to office, including the first and last walk and every transfer. If your route depends on a bus feeding the 2 Line at South Bellevue or Bellevue Downtown, verify that connection against the current timetable. A scheduled train interval alone cannot tell you whether a particular bus arrival will connect conveniently.

For a driving option, use your likely departure window and exact destinations, including the approach to the office and the actual parking or drop-off arrangement. Compare more than one representative weekday if you can; one routing estimate cannot establish typical travel time or reliability. Keep parking and any tolls or fuel in the cost estimate, and account for the final walk from where you can actually park.

Do not insert a generic “Seattle to Bellevue” travel time into the comparison. A route from one part of either city can differ substantially from another, and departure time, incidents, parking access, and the last part of the trip all affect the result. Without the relevant addresses and time window, a city-level comparison cannot identify the faster commute.
Turn the comparison into offer questions
Once you have a side-by-side estimate, ask the employer about details that could change the routine or its cost:

- Is there a commuter benefit or transit support, and what are its terms?
- How often does the team work late or outside the hours you used to check transit service?
- Where are employees expected to park, and is parking available for the hours you would work?
Do not count a benefit, parking arrangement, or schedule flexibility until the employer confirms it. If an answer changes your assumptions, update both the relevant cost and the number of trips you expect to make.
