Choose the Samsung T7 Shield if your portable SSD may face dust, splashes, or accidental drops: its key advantage is a manufacturer-rated IP65 enclosure and a controlled-condition drop test. Choose the standard T7 if you want the lighter drive and do not need that added protection. Samsung lists the same maximum sequential speeds for both, so the Shield is not the faster choice on paper.

Which drive should you choose?
Choose the T7 Shield for tougher working conditions
The Shield is the clearer pick for travel, field work, or other situations where a drive could encounter dust, splashes, or a fall. Samsung rates it IP65 and reports a three-meter drop test, but those figures describe controlled testing rather than a guarantee against damage in every real-world accident. Liquid-, dust-, and drop-related damage is excluded from the referenced warranty terms.
Choose the T7 if lower weight matters more
Samsung’s published figures put the standard T7 at 72 g and the Shield at 98 g. The standard model is the lighter option for a bag or pocket if you do not need the Shield’s stated protection. The T7 weight comes from Samsung product search material rather than a product page verified on opening, so treat that figure accordingly.
Do not choose the Shield expecting higher speed
Samsung advertises the same peak sequential rates for both drives: up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write. These are maximum specifications, not everyday transfer-rate guarantees. Actual speed depends on the computer or other host, its port, the cable, UASP support, and the system environment.

How fast is the Samsung T7 Shield?
Samsung specifies up to 1,050 MB/s sequential read and 1,000 MB/s sequential write. To reach its maximum listed speed, Samsung says the host and cable must support USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps and UASP mode must be enabled. A slower port, unsuitable cable, or different host configuration can limit transfers.
Samsung also reports internal sustained sequential-write results at 25°C: more than 900 MB/s for the 1 TB model and 1,000 MB/s for the 2 TB model. These are Samsung’s own test results, not independent comparative benchmarks; no equivalent independent T7-versus-Shield results are established here.

Is the Samsung T7 Shield waterproof?
No. Samsung describes the Shield as water resistant, not waterproof under all conditions. Its IP65 rating is based on internal controlled tests: fresh water sprayed from a nozzle at three meters for three minutes, and active dust exposure in a vacuum chamber for eight hours. Samsung cautions that resistance varies with actual environmental conditions. The rating does not establish safety for immersion, and Samsung excludes liquid- and dust-related damage from the stated warranty coverage.
Capacity, compatibility, and setup
Capacity options
The Shield Revision 2.0 datasheet lists 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB models; its launch announcement listed only 1 TB and 2 TB. Samsung’s official product search result lists the standard T7 in 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB capacities, although the result’s destination redirected when opened. Confirm the exact capacity and regional SKU in the listing you intend to buy.

Ports, cables, and devices
Both models use USB 3.2 Gen 2 for the cited speed claims. Samsung says the Shield includes USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables and names PCs, Macs, Android smartphones, and game consoles among compatible device types, while noting that host compatibility varies. Some operating systems may require reformatting. Samsung lists Windows 7 or later, Mac OS X 10.10 or later, and Android Lollipop or later as minimum requirements for its software; those software requirements are not a guarantee that every device or configuration will work at full speed.
Encryption
Samsung specifies AES 256-bit hardware encryption for the T7 Shield. Use of encryption or Samsung’s management software may require setup on a compatible system. The cited T7 product-search material does not provide a comparable encryption detail, so this evidence does not establish a difference between the drives on that feature.

Price and value
There is no reliable current, like-for-like price comparison established for the two models. Samsung’s US launch announcement gave historical launch MSRPs of $159.99 for the 1 TB Shield and $289.99 for the 2 TB Shield in 2022; those are not current prices. Compare live listings for the same capacity and region when buying, and weigh any price premium for the Shield against whether its extra protection is useful to you.
