Usually, the practical choice is the platform whose compatible batteries and chargers you already own—provided its specific tools suit your work. If you are starting from scratch, compare the exact tools and kits you need rather than choosing by brand name or voltage label. DEWALT’s “20V MAX” is a maximum initial voltage measured without a workload; its nominal voltage is 18V, so the number alone does not show that it is more powerful than Milwaukee M18.
What is the difference between M18 and 20V MAX?
M18 and 20V MAX are cordless-tool systems built around batteries, chargers, and compatible tools. DEWALT explains that its 20V MAX label refers to maximum initial battery voltage measured without a workload, while nominal voltage is 18V. The label is not a fair basis for claiming a power advantage over Milwaukee M18. DEWALT’s US 20V MAX platform page also advertises 300+ products.
Battery compatibility is platform-specific. Milwaukee says M18 batteries fit M18 tools and are compatible with M18 tools and chargers. Do not assume M18 batteries work in DEWALT tools, or vice versa; check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact tool and battery before buying.
Which platform should you choose?
If you already own compatible tools
Start with the batteries and chargers you have. Staying on a platform can avoid buying duplicate charging equipment and batteries, as long as the tool you need is available in a suitable model. For M18, Milwaukee documents compatibility across M18 tools and chargers. For either brand, verify the exact tool’s battery requirements and recommendations.
#1 Best Overall
If you are buying your first cordless tools
Make a shortlist of the specific tools you need, then compare equivalent models for the same job. Consider the task, expected workload, duty cycle, ergonomics, and battery requirements. There is no platform-wide performance winner established by the manufacturers’ material cited here, and performance can vary by tool model, battery, load, and test conditions.
If your work puts high demands on batteries
Milwaukee groups its M18 battery packs by practical tradeoffs: CP packs are the most compact, XC packs balance size and weight with power and runtime, and HD packs are larger, intended for high power and longer runtime in demanding or extended work. Treat these as form-factor and workload categories, not a simple ranking of good, better, and best. Check the battery recommendation for your particular tool.

How to compare kits and long-term value
A platform decision is also a purchase decision. For the specific tools on your shortlist, compare current local prices and what each offer includes. A bare tool may be less useful or less economical if you also need batteries and a charger; a kit may include pack sizes or accessories you do not need.
- Check whether the offer is a bare tool or a kit.
- Record the number and type of batteries, charger, and case included.
- Compare the pack sizes against your tools and expected runtime needs.
- Check current local pricing rather than assuming a stable price or bundle.
- Confirm warranty terms for the exact tool and battery in your sales region.
The manufacturers’ platform counts are useful only as broad scale indicators, not as directly comparable proof that one system is larger. DEWALT’s US page says “300+” 20V MAX products; Milwaukee said on August 13, 2026, that M18 offers more than 300 solutions. The wording and counting methods are not shown to be equivalent. Milwaukee’s announcement gives its figure and describes its battery update.

What should existing M18 owners know about the battery update?
In its August 13, 2026 announcement, Milwaukee said its HIGH OUTPUT XC5 and resistant version offer 50% more power versus the older REDLITHIUM XC5.0 at 5Ah. Milwaukee also said the XC5 is 25% smaller and 30% lighter than the HIGH OUTPUT XC6.0. These are Milwaukee’s product claims, not independent matched tests against DEWALT batteries or tools. Confirm that a new pack is appropriate for your tool and work before choosing it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should charging time affect your decision?
Milwaukee says charging experience depends on the battery pack, charger, and environmental conditions. In Milwaukee testing at room temperature with its M18 Super Charger, it reports a FORGE XC6.0 full charge in 25 minutes, including 15 minutes to 80%. The same FAQ reports 60 minutes for a HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0, 45 minutes for a HIGH OUTPUT XC8.0, and 60 minutes for a REDLITHIUM XC5.0 under those test conditions; actual results may vary. These figures describe Milwaukee’s charging setup, not a head-to-head comparison with DEWALT. See Milwaukee’s M18 battery FAQ for compatibility and charging information.
