Choose an M18 tool by starting with the operation your project requires, then narrow the choice by the model’s published capability, handling, battery needs, and kit contents. A drill/driver, impact driver, saw, grinder, and oscillating multi-tool do different jobs; the M18 label identifies a battery platform, not a single kind of tool.

Start with the job, not the M18 label

Write down what the tool must do and what material you will work with. Drilling holes and driving fasteners call for a drill/driver or impact driver; cutting, grinding, and oscillating work require different tool types. Milwaukee’s six-tool M18 combo kit lists these as separate tools: a drill/driver, impact driver, circular saw, SAWZALL reciprocating saw, grinder, and multi-tool. That list is a useful reminder that the tools are not interchangeable, not a complete material-by-material selection chart. Milwaukee’s 2697-26 kit page.

Once you know the operation, compare specific models for the work involved. Look for published specifications and intended applications on the product page; do not assume a number listed for one M18 tool applies to all tools on the platform.

Compare the model’s capability and handling

As one model-specific example, Milwaukee lists its M18 Compact Brushless 1/2-inch Drill/Driver Kit, model 3601-21CT, at 550 in-lb of torque and a speed range of 0–1,700 RPM. These are the manufacturer’s published specifications for that drill/driver, not general specifications for M18 drills. Milwaukee’s 3601-21CT product page.

Milwaukee 2626-20 M18 18V Lithium Ion Cordless 18,000 OPM Orbiting Multi Tool with Woodcutting Blades and Sanding Pad with Sheets Included (Battery Not Included, Power Tool Only)
  • 12 SPEED SETTINGS: This fully adjustable tool will switch from 11,000 to a whopping 18,000 OPM for a variety of applications, from the delicate to the heavy duty
  • DURABILITY: The all-metal gear case will help this tool resist common impacts on the job, prolonging its longevity
  • HANDLING: A rubberized mold covering the handle allows you to keep a firm grip of this multi-tool, improving handling even in slippery conditions
  • LED LIGHTING: Illuminate your work subject with the help of the onboard LED panel, located at on the head of the tool so it works from any angle
  • REDLINK TECHNOLOGY: The M18 batteries that plug into this tool have technology that allows cross-communication between the two platforms. This means that when the batteries know when the tool is close to overheating, and they’ll ease the amount of power they give out. This, too, improves the longevity of the multi-tool

Dimensions and handling matter when the tool must fit into a tight space or be used overhead. Milwaukee describes the 3601-21CT as compact, but whether a tool feels comfortable depends on the user, grip, task, and how long it must be held. If possible, consider the tool’s size and balance in the positions where you expect to use it, rather than choosing from a specification alone.

Choose a compatible battery and balance weight against runtime

Match the battery platform printed on the battery to the tool. Milwaukee states, “All M18™ Batteries are compatible with M18™ tools & chargers.” Its battery-selection guidance describes M12, M18, and MX FUEL as separate battery families; do not assume an M12 or MX FUEL battery fits an M18 tool. See Milwaukee’s M18 Batteries & Chargers FAQ and Milwaukee’s battery-selection guidance.

Milwaukee 2719-20 M18 FUEL Hackzall (Bare Tool), Red, Black,
  • POWERSTATE Brushless Motor: Increased cutting speed and power throught the toughtest applications
  • REDLINK Plus Intelligence: The most advanced system of cordless power tool electronics; provides optimized performance and overload protection using total sysem communication between tool, battery and charger
  • REDLITHIUM battery technology: Superior pack construction, electronics and performance deliver more work per charge and more work over pack life than any battery on the market
  • 1-Handed design provides superior control and versatitily over standard reciprocating saws
  • 7/8 in. stroke length removes more material with each stroke resulting in the faster cuts

Within the M18 family, Milwaukee groups batteries by size and use:

  • CP: the most compact and lightweight option.
  • XC: a balance of size and weight, power, and runtime.
  • HD: the largest overall size, intended for high-power needs and longer runtime in long-duration, high-demand applications.

That guidance describes trade-offs, not a universal battery choice for a particular tool or project. A smaller, lighter battery may suit overhead work or confined spaces; a larger one may be more attractive when the task is demanding or prolonged. Consider how much runtime you need alongside how much added size and weight you are willing to handle.

Check kit contents against the tools and batteries you own

A kit can be convenient when you need several tools, but its value depends on whether you will use what is included and what you already own. Milwaukee’s 3601-21CT kit page lists the drill/driver, one M18 REDLITHIUM CP2.0 battery, an M18/M12 multi-voltage charger, and a contractor bag. Check the named kit’s product page for its listed contents.

Milwaukee’s 2697-26 page lists six tools—a drill/driver, impact driver, circular saw, SAWZALL reciprocating saw, grinder, and multi-tool—along with batteries, a charger, and a bag. It is an example of a broad starter set, not an automatic choice for a single project or for someone who already owns some of those tools. The page’s contents and model status can change, so verify them before buying. The available product information does not establish that this combo kit is the best value at current prices. Milwaukee’s 2697-26 kit page.

Before choosing a bundle, compare the listed tools, batteries, charger, and bag with what you already have. Avoid paying for duplicate items you do not need, and confirm that any battery included is M18 if you intend to use it with an M18 tool.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Name the operation and material. Decide whether the project involves drilling, fastening, cutting, grinding, or oscillating work.
  2. Choose the corresponding tool type. Use the manufacturer’s product pages to identify candidate tools; the six-tool kit provides examples of distinct M18 categories, not a complete guide to every application.
  3. Compare the exact models. Check model-specific specifications and intended applications. Treat the 3601-21CT’s published torque and speed as applying only to that model.
  4. Assess access and handling. Consider tight clearances, overhead use, tool size, and the balance you can manage comfortably.
  5. Select the battery trade-off. Weigh CP compactness, XC balance, or HD capacity against expected runtime and workload.
  6. Audit the bundle. Compare included tools, batteries, charger, and bag with your existing equipment, then verify current kit contents on Milwaukee’s product page.
