During setup, enable Security with Password; Samsung identifies the T7’s protection as AES 256-bit hardware encryption. Keep the password safe: forgetting it can mean resetting the drive and erasing its data.
What T7 password protection does
Samsung makes security mode optional. When enabled, the T7’s protected data stays inaccessible until you connect the drive and unlock it with your password. Samsung lists AES 256-bit hardware encryption as a T7 specification; this is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independent assessment of security against particular attacks. How to set a password on a Samsung T7
- Connect the T7 to a supported computer and open Samsung Portable SSD Software 1.0. It may not open automatically; Samsung’s manual says to launch the application from the desktop or its installed application location.
- Follow the setup prompts and accept the terms. Samsung says the software installs components on the computer for security mode.
- On the welcome or setup screen, select Security with Password instead of leaving security mode off.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to create the password. The manual material available does not establish a specific length or complexity requirement, so follow the requirements displayed by the app.
- When setup is complete, disconnect and reconnect the T7 to confirm the workflow: enter the password and select UNLOCK to access protected data.
These steps follow the Samsung Portable SSD T7 User Manual. If the drive is still locked, only its small security/software partition is visible; the protected data is not available until you unlock it.
Important compatibility notes
Samsung lists Windows 7 or higher, Mac OS X 10.10 or higher, and Android Lollipop or higher for the T7. Those general drive requirements do not guarantee that Security Mode works in every setup: Samsung says security support depends on supported operating-system versions.

For Mac setup, Samsung’s T7 manual warns that Portable SSD Software 1.0 may not operate unless the device or driver is enabled. Check the manual’s Mac instructions if the software does not work as expected. Samsung’s support page also lists an Installation Guide dated December 1, 2025, and Magician downloads dated March 30, 2026; the existence of those downloads does not establish that Magician is the correct setup app for this T7 security workflow. The T7 manual specifically names Portable SSD Software 1.0. See Samsung’s consumer-storage support page.
What if you forget the password?
Samsung warns that a forgotten password may require restoring the T7 to factory settings through a customer-service center. That reset erases all user data on the drive. Treat the password as essential: keep it somewhere secure and make sure any important files have a separate backup before enabling password protection.

Standard T7 versus T7 Touch
The standard T7 supports password protection but does not have a fingerprint sensor. Fingerprint recognition is an optional feature of the separate T7 Touch model, which also supports password-related security. See Samsung’s T7 Touch product page for that model distinction.
