For most apps choosing an identity provider available to developers generally, support Google Sign-In first. Add Sign in with ChatGPT only if you can obtain OpenAI’s access: its website identity flow is currently limited to selected commercial partners in a trial. Keep that identity feature separate from OpenAI’s distinct option for eligible users to authorize ChatGPT plan usage in certain AI integrations. Neither provider guarantees better conversion or universal security; your app must verify identities and manage its own accounts and sessions.

Which provider should your app support?
Choose Google first for broadly available website sign-in
Google’s developer documentation and Google Identity Services provide a generally documented route for web authentication. Google recommends Sign In With Google when an app only needs the openid, email, and profile scopes; separate API authorization is appropriate only when the app needs access to Google resources. Google also documents expedited authentication for users already signed in on a device or browser, including automatic, one-tap, or one-click options for returning users.
Add ChatGPT sign-in when access and product fit justify it
ChatGPT sign-in can be useful as an additional identity choice for a product whose audience values using a ChatGPT account. But the website identity feature is not generally available to all developers: OpenAI describes it as a limited trial for selected commercial partners. Confirm eligibility before designing a launch around it.

Do not confuse website identity sign-in with ChatGPT plan usage. OpenAI’s separate open-source integration flow is described for eligible ChatGPT Plus or Pro users and eligible AI requests; the user can choose whether to grant plan-use permission and can manage app access and usage in ChatGPT settings. OpenAI’s cookbook article describing that flow is dated September 28, 2026. Its availability is distinct from the website identity trial.
What signing in with ChatGPT does—and does not—authorize
The documented OpenAI website flow uses OAuth 2.0 Authorization Code with PKCE and OpenID Connect. Your backend exchanges the authorization code, verifies the ID token, and associates the verified issuer, client ID, and subject (sub) with an account in your app. Identity scopes can provide a stable account identifier and available profile claims. They do not expose ChatGPT conversations or grant access to OpenAI API resources. Plan usage requires separate scopes and explicit user authorization.

Google likewise separates authentication from authorization. Google’s OpenID Connect documentation says its OAuth 2.0 authentication conforms to OpenID Connect and is OpenID Certified. An ID token proves an identity claim after validation; it does not by itself authorize access to Google APIs. Ask for resource scopes only when the app actually needs the relevant API access.
How to implement either option on a website
Sign in with ChatGPT
- Confirm that your organization is eligible for the website identity integration, then create an OAuth client and register the exact callback URL for each environment.
- Use a maintained OAuth or OpenID Connect library where possible. Start the Authorization Code flow with PKCE and store short-lived transaction state on the backend.
- Exchange the returned authorization code on the backend and validate the ID token, including its issuer against OpenAI’s discovery metadata and its client ID and subject.
- Use the verified issuer, client ID, and
subto find or create your app’s account, then issue your app’s own secure session.
OpenAI assigns the application responsibility for account creation, enterprise sign-in policy, sessions, authorization, and connector access. Its quickstart documents ChatGPT plan usage separately from identity scopes.

Google Sign-In
- Set up a Google Cloud project and credentials, then register the redirect URIs your website will use.
- Use Google Identity Services for website sign-in and a well-tested OAuth or OpenID Connect library for server-side handling.
- Validate Google ID tokens before relying on their claims. In a server flow, follow Google’s anti-forgery state-check guidance.
- Create or locate the app account from the verified identity, then issue your app’s own secure session.
Google labels older sign-in APIs as legacy in its authentication overview; use the current Google Identity Services guidance instead.
Account linking and session design
Provider sign-in authenticates an external identity; it should not become your app’s session token. Decide how your app handles account creation, duplicate identities, linking, unlinking, session issuance, and account recovery before launch.

- Key a provider identity by the verified provider identifiers and subject, rather than treating an email address as a universal account key.
- When a signed-in user adds ChatGPT to an existing account, or a ChatGPT email matches an existing account, require confirmation. OpenAI explicitly warns that an email match alone is not proof of account ownership.
- Apply a similarly deliberate policy to Google identities: validate the ID token first, then decide whether to link or create an account under your app’s rules.
- Keep token validation and session creation on the backend; do not accept an unverified client-side claim as an authenticated app session.
Availability and evidence boundaries
OpenAI’s website guide describes ChatGPT identity sign-in as a limited trial for selected commercial partners. Its quickstart separately describes ChatGPT plan usage as available to all open-source partners and selected private clients. These are different integration types, not evidence that every developer can add website sign-in. Google’s documentation provides a website sign-in path through Google Identity Services.
Official implementation documentation does not establish that either provider produces higher conversion or is universally more secure. Choose based on availability, user fit, requested permissions, and your ability to implement token validation, account policy, and sessions correctly. The linked platform documentation was reviewed on October 4, 2026; eligibility and instructions can change, so consult the official pages when planning an implementation.
