Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA failed video download usually comes down to one of five things: the video or account is not eligible, the connection dropped, the device cannot save the file, the source denied access, or the downloader could not handle the available format. Note the exact error and check those layers in order; the right fix depends on which one failed.
Start with the exact error
Before changing settings, record the full error message, the video site, the downloader and its version, your device and operating system, and whether the problem affects one video or every video. A message such as “Disk full” points to local storage; “Forbidden” or HTTP 403 points toward access; a completed file with no sound or picture may involve format handling.
Error wording varies between apps, so treat it as a clue rather than a diagnosis. If only one video fails, check that video’s availability and permissions first. If all downloads fail, investigate the connection, destination folder, and the downloader’s general access to the source.
Confirm the video and account are eligible
First make sure the video is still available and that the signed-in account is allowed to access it. Some platforms restrict downloads to particular accounts, memberships, regions, or their own offline-viewing feature. Use the source’s permitted download method rather than assuming a third-party downloader can save any video you can watch.

YouTube’s own download options
For offline downloads through YouTube, confirm that the app is signed in to the account with the required Premium membership. YouTube recommends a strong internet connection and 3 Mbps or faster for its own downloads; that is YouTube-specific guidance, not a universal minimum for all video services. See YouTube’s instructions for downloading videos to watch offline.
YouTube says its feature lets creators download their own uploaded videos, but it does not let viewers download another person’s video through that feature. YouTube lists restrictions for creator downloads, including removed videos, copyright or Community Guidelines strikes, preapproved audio, and downloading the same video more than five times in 24 hours. Check YouTube’s guidance on downloading your own videos for current eligibility details.
Check the connection and retry
Make sure the device has working internet, then try a more reliable connection if the current Wi-Fi or mobile signal is weak. Resume a paused transfer if the downloader offers that option; otherwise, retry once after the connection is stable. YouTube’s 3 Mbps recommendation applies to YouTube downloads, and meeting it does not guarantee that a different source or downloader will succeed.

Chrome’s download guidance identifies unstable internet as one reason a file may not download and recommends trying again later or resuming a paused download. Its advice is for Chrome, but the general distinction is useful: a connection interruption can leave a transfer incomplete even when the video and save location are valid. See Chrome’s download-error guidance.

Check that the destination drive has enough free space and that your account or app can write to the selected folder. A browser-style “Disk full” error means there is not enough space for the file; “Insufficient permissions” or “System busy” can mean the app cannot save to the chosen location. Free space, choose a folder you can access, and retry. Chrome explains these errors in its download-error guidance.
For YouTube offline downloads on a supported phone or tablet, saving to an SD card can avoid using internal storage. That option applies to YouTube’s offline feature and compatible devices, not every downloader. See YouTube’s instructions for using an SD card for downloads.

Separate access errors from local problems
“Needs authorisation,” “Forbidden,” and HTTP 403 usually indicate that the source or server refused the request, rather than that your device ran out of space. Check whether you are signed in to the right account and whether that account can access the video. Chrome recommends checking authentication and contacting the site owner if permission is absent.
A third-party tool can also stop working when a site changes its URLs or request behavior. The yt-dlp FAQ describes URL changes as a reason a site may appear unsupported and notes anti-bot fingerprinting in some 403 errors. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of every 403. Do not treat them as permission to bypass access controls; use an official download option where one exists. See the yt-dlp FAQ.

Check format and audio/video handling
If a download finishes but has no sound, no picture, or will not play, the problem may be the selected format or the tool’s handling of separate streams. Some sites, notably YouTube, provide audio and video separately at higher quality; a downloader may need to merge them into a playable file. The yt-dlp FAQ explains this behavior for its tool, but steps and support differ across downloaders.

If the error names an unavailable format, choose one the downloader actually lists or consult that app’s current documentation. If the issue is a file that downloads but will not play, check whether the downloader supports merging the streams and whether the finished output is a format your player can open. See the yt-dlp FAQ for its explanation of separate audio and video streams.
Use the failure pattern to choose the next check
- One video fails: check whether it is still available, whether your account can access it, and whether the source permits downloading it.
- Every video fails: verify the connection and save destination, then check whether the downloader can still access the source.
- The transfer stops partway: check the connection, available storage, and whether the downloader can resume the file.
- The server says forbidden or requires authorisation: check sign-in and permissions rather than changing storage settings.
- The file completes but is unusable: check format availability, stream merging, and playback support.
Exact menus, compatibility requirements, and fixes depend on the video source, downloader, and operating system. If these checks do not identify the problem, consult the current support page for the specific app and source, using the recorded error and version details.
