There is no confirmed Steam Deck 2 specification sheet or independent benchmark in the sources available here. Until Valve announces a device and reviewers test retail hardware, claims about its chip, release timing, or frame rates remain unconfirmed. The right way to evaluate those claims is to separate official specifications from rumors, then compare a confirmed successor with a clearly identified Steam Deck model under matched conditions.

What is actually known about Steam Deck 2?

Valve has not published confirmed Steam Deck 2 specifications in the sources cited below. Valve’s official Steam Deck tech specs and hardware overview describe current Steam Deck models, not a successor. Valve identifies the current hardware architecture as Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 graphics; use the specification page to check the exact model’s display, storage, connectivity, and other attributes rather than treating LCD and OLED revisions as interchangeable.

In 2025, Ars Technica reported Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais saying that available handheld system-on-chip offerings did not yet meet the company’s bar for a truly next-generation Steam Deck. That is reporting about Valve’s thinking, not a successor specification or benchmark. Valve’s 2022 booklet, “The Future: more Steam Decks, more SteamOS,” discussed future hardware and software iterations but supplied no product name, launch date, or technical details.

How to treat the Gainsborough rumor

PC Gamer reported a theory, attributed to a YouTube hardware leaker, that an AMD APU called “Gainsborough” could power a future Steam Deck. Neither Valve nor AMD has confirmed that link in the cited reporting. The chip name, architecture, core or compute-unit counts, clocks, and performance estimates should therefore be described as rumor, not as established Deck 2 facts.

How to separate rumors, specifications, and results

Evaluate each claim by its source and evidence. An official Valve or AMD announcement can establish a component or specification; it cannot by itself establish how a complete handheld performs in games. A reported leak can suggest what might appear, but it remains unconfirmed until the companies verify it. Independent testing of a retail device is needed to establish real-world performance, battery life, noise, and thermals.

  • Official specification: A published product detail from Valve or AMD, tied to the named model.
  • Manufacturer claim: A figure or capability stated by the maker, which should not be presented as an independent measurement.
  • Rumor: Unverified reporting or speculation, such as the reported Gainsborough connection.
  • Independent result: A measurement from identified retail hardware, with the test conditions disclosed.

No Steam Deck 2 game benchmarks, battery tests, acoustic measurements, thermal measurements, or confirmed retail-device results are established by the cited sources. A benchmark of a rumored chip in another product would not substitute for testing the complete handheld.

How to make a fair Steam Deck versus successor comparison

Once a confirmed successor is available, start with a retail Steam Deck and a retail successor. Identify the precise model and firmware for each, and hold the game and settings constant. A result is useful only when readers can tell whether the devices were tested on comparable terms.

  1. Record the hardware and software. Name each model, firmware, operating system, graphics driver, and Proton version. Use the same game build where possible, and document any unavoidable differences.
  2. Match the workload. Test the same games in repeatable gameplay sections, at the same resolution, graphics settings, frame cap, and upscaling configuration. Keep native rendering separate from upscaling or frame-generation results.
  3. Separate power conditions. Run plugged-in and battery tests separately. Record power limits and battery charge state; do not compare a faster result at a higher power limit as if it proved better efficiency.
  4. Measure consistency, not just peaks. Report average frame rate and frame-time consistency, not only a peak FPS figure. Include the test scene and method so readers can interpret the result.
  5. Pair performance with energy use. Report power draw alongside performance and measure battery runtime at the tested settings. A faster device may draw more power, so FPS alone does not reveal efficiency or how long it can sustain play.
  6. Document the rest of the experience. State how fan noise and surface or internal temperatures were measured. Compare screen resolution, refresh behavior, and image quality, plus compatibility and shader-compilation behavior in the selected games.

What matters beyond frame rate

A purchase comparison should cover more than speed. Once there are real successor models and reliable testing, weigh sustained performance at matched power, battery life under a matched workload, display quality and resolution, comfort and controls, weight, compatibility and software support, storage and upgradeability, and price and availability. Use official documentation for specifications and compatibility policy, and independent measurements for performance and battery claims.

For a current-model reference, Valve’s Steam Deck OLED announcement lists a 40 Wh battery and manufacturer-stated gameplay of 2–8 hours depending on content. Those are OLED manufacturer claims, not independent results and not evidence of Steam Deck 2 performance; they should be kept tied to the OLED model and its stated conditions.

How to read claims about how much faster it will be

Until a confirmed retail device is tested, no uplift percentage or predicted frame rate is established. Once testing exists, compare results from the same games and settings and show power draw with frame rates. If one device uses a higher power limit, a higher FPS result alone does not demonstrate a like-for-like efficiency improvement. Treat any forecast based on a rumored chip as a forecast—not a measured Deck 2 result.

Ars Technica’s 2025 report on Griffais’s comments is useful context for why a successor may be judged against a meaningful handheld performance step, but it does not specify when such a device will arrive or how fast it will be. The report’s statement is not a substitute for a public spec sheet or reproducible retail testing.
