A 2.4 GHz-only device can join a Wi-Fi network that also offers 5 GHz; the router does not necessarily need separate network names. Confirm that 2.4 GHz is enabled, put the device into pairing mode, and follow its maker’s app. If that app specifically requires your phone to use 2.4 GHz during setup, switch the phone using a supported router setting or a separate 2.4 GHz network name if available.
Before setup: check the device and router
- Check the device’s requirements. Its manual or support page should state that it supports 2.4 GHz and identify any required Wi-Fi security mode or pairing method. Requirements vary by model.
- Confirm the router broadcasts 2.4 GHz. Router or mesh settings may call this a Wi-Fi band, 2.4 GHz radio, Smart Connect, band steering, or an IoT network. The labels and controls depend on the router.
- Do not assume a shared network name means 2.4 GHz is unavailable. Routers can broadcast multiple bands under one SSID and steer devices to a band. On Google Nest Wifi, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google Wifi, for example, a phone and a smart-home device can use different bands while connected to the same network name. Google notes that some setup flows may nevertheless require the phone to use 2.4 GHz (Google Nest Help).
Connect the device
- Place the device near the router for setup, and make sure it has power.
- Put it into pairing mode as its manual directs, then open the device maker’s official app and follow its prompts.
- Choose the Wi-Fi network and enter its password. Start with your normal network unless the app instructs you otherwise. If the SSID is hidden, enter it manually only if the device’s setup flow supports that.
- Allow the permissions the setup needs. Turn on Bluetooth if the app uses it. On iPhone or iPad, allow the app Local Network access when prompted. Keep the phone on the intended Wi-Fi network; some setup workflows may also be affected by cellular-data conditions. Google’s setup guidance lists power, network, and app conditions among checks to make when pairing fails (Google Nest Help).
If the app requires your phone to use 2.4 GHz
Some apps check the phone’s current band or require it to be on 2.4 GHz during onboarding. First look for a separate 2.4 GHz network name in your router settings. If your router combines bands under one name, use its documented temporary setup control if it offers one. Settings and available options vary by model; do not change router settings based on instructions for a different system.
Some mesh systems select the phone’s band automatically rather than offering a manual choice. Google suggests moving the phone farther from the router as a possible way to encourage a switch to 2.4 GHz when manual selection is unavailable (Google Nest Help). This is not guaranteed to work on every router or phone. Restore temporary router changes after setup.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The device cannot see the Wi-Fi network
- Check that the 2.4 GHz radio is enabled and that the network name and password are correct.
- Move the device closer to the router and confirm it is in pairing mode.
- If the network name is hidden, try entering it manually only if the device app allows it. Device and regional radio requirements can differ.
The app says the phone is on 5 GHz
Connect the phone to a separate 2.4 GHz SSID if the router provides one, or use the router’s documented temporary setup option. If band steering is automatic, consult the router maker’s guidance rather than assuming that every system can split its bands (Google Nest Help; TP-Link Deco support).

- Wifi 6 High-speed Transmission: The WiFi adapter supports the new generation of WiFi6 technology with transmission speeds of up to 600 Mbps on 5 GHz + 287 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, enabling lightning-fast transmission of video at ultra-high speed and low latency
- Dual-band Connection: The AX900 USB WiFi adapter under the AX standard, the 5G band rate can reach 600Mbps, and the 2.4G band can reach 286Mbps. Note: Use WiFi 6 Router to achieve AX900 speed
- Built-in Drivers for Windows 10/11: The WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC just supports Windows 10/11 which CPU architecture is X86/X64, supports CD-free installation, no need to download drivers, saving time and worry. Please note this Adapter doesn't support MacOS/Linux/Win 8, 8.1, 7, XP
- Receive & Transmit Two in One: A desktop computer can connect to the WiFi wireless Internet by connecting it to a wireless network card. A networked computer can connect to the network card to transmit WiFi and share it with other devices
- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
The app finds the device but setup will not finish
- Recheck the Wi-Fi password, device power, and pairing mode.
- Enable Bluetooth if the app’s flow uses it, and grant Local Network access on iOS when requested.
- Make sure the phone is using the intended Wi-Fi network. Restart the app, device, or router only as the device maker’s support guidance recommends (Google Nest Help).
Setup completes, but discovery or control does not work
Check whether the device is on a guest network or whether the router has client or AP isolation enabled. Guest networks, captive portals, enterprise authentication, and isolation settings can prevent some devices from completing setup or communicating locally. Use the device maker’s supported network types and the router maker’s guidance; Google identifies guest mode and client isolation as possible blockers (Google Nest Help; Google Nest Help).
The device works near the router but not where you want it
Treat this as a coverage issue. Try moving the router or device closer first; 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther than 5 or 6 GHz, though walls and other conditions affect coverage. An extender may help when the distance cannot practically be reduced, but it will not fix an incorrect password, band-selection problem, unsupported security mode, app permission, or client isolation. Google recommends trying placement changes before considering an extender (Google Nest Help).

Change security settings only for a documented compatibility reason
Do not turn off Wi-Fi security or leave a network open as a general troubleshooting shortcut. Follow the exact device and router documentation. Apple describes WPA2/WPA3 Transitional as an option that lets compatible older devices use WPA2 Personal (AES) alongside WPA3-capable clients (Apple Support). TP-Link’s Deco guidance recommends WPA2-PSK-only for the specific compatibility case it describes; that is not a universal recommendation for other routers or devices (TP-Link Deco support).
