Reconnect each device through its manufacturer’s app, using that model’s change-network or setup instructions. If you replaced only the router, some devices may reconnect when the new router uses the old Wi‑Fi name, password, and security settings—but this is not guaranteed. Save a factory reset for cases where the app or manufacturer’s instructions call for one.

First, identify what changed

Devices commonly save the Wi‑Fi credentials they were set up with. If you changed the network name (SSID), password, or security settings, a device may still be trying to use the old details. A router or internet-provider change can cause the same issue if it changed those settings.

If you replaced the router but can still configure it, reusing the old SSID, password, and security or encryption type may let some supported devices reconnect without individual setup. TP-Link documents this option for Tapo and Kasa devices; it does not guarantee that every brand or model will reconnect automatically. TP-Link’s guidance for devices appearing offline after a router change explains its limitations.

Get the network and device ready

  • Confirm that the router is online and that your phone is connected to the intended home Wi‑Fi network.
  • Check that the device has power or a charged battery.
  • Open the manufacturer’s app and look for the device’s current status and reconnect instructions.

If the Wi‑Fi or mesh network itself is not working, Google recommends checking the cables and restarting the modem first, followed by the primary router or point and then additional mesh points. This sequence is for network-infrastructure problems, not a required restart ritual for every offline device. Google’s instructions for connecting Nest or Home devices to a new Wi‑Fi network include its network troubleshooting guidance.

Reconnect through the manufacturer’s app

There is no universal smart-home setting for changing Wi‑Fi networks. The menu path depends on the brand, device type, and sometimes the model. Use the current app or model manual if the labels differ from these examples.

Google Nest and Home devices

Use the Google Home app and follow the instructions for the specific device. Google’s process varies: some devices may require forgetting the old network and adding the device again, while thermostats and other product types have their own paths. Google also notes that some devices may need a factory reset before setup on the new network. See Google’s new Wi‑Fi connection instructions.

Ring devices

  1. Open the Ring app and select the device.
  2. Open Device Health.
  3. Under Network, choose Reconnect or Change Network, then follow the prompts.

Ring’s menu labels and troubleshooting options are described in its device Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guidance.

TP-Link Tapo and Kasa devices

TP-Link says the Tapo/Kasa app does not support switching Wi‑Fi networks directly. If you cannot reuse the old wireless settings, follow the reset and reconfiguration instructions for the exact model rather than assuming that an in-app network-change option exists. See TP-Link’s router-change troubleshooting guidance.

Philips Hue lights

Check whether your Hue setup uses a Hue Bridge or a supported direct Matter pairing. In a Bridge-based setup, the Bridge connects to the router; do not assume the bulbs themselves are ordinary Wi‑Fi devices that need the home network password. Some supported Hue lights have a direct Matter setup path, which is a separate pairing choice. Consult Philips Hue’s bulb and Bridge information or its Matter setup guide for the applicable configuration.

Troubleshoot one offline device at a time

  1. Check the credentials. Enter the exact network name and password, paying attention to spelling and capitalization. Confirm that the app is using the intended home network.
  2. Check power and status. Make sure the device is powered. For a Google speaker or display, a response to a question or command indicates that it is connected to Wi‑Fi, according to Google’s offline-device guidance.
  3. Improve the signal. Temporarily move the device nearer the router or a mesh point, then retry the app’s setup flow. A mesh point also needs to be within range of the rest of the mesh.
  4. Check band compatibility. Confirm which Wi‑Fi bands the model supports. Ring suggests trying 2.4 GHz rather than 5 GHz in relevant cases; that is not a universal requirement for all smart-home devices. Follow Ring’s troubleshooting guidance or the instructions for your model.
  5. Follow the app’s model-specific prompts. If setup still fails, check the manufacturer’s current instructions before removing the device or resetting it.

Reset only when the instructions call for it

A factory reset is a fallback when the maker’s app cannot change the network, the supported reconnect flow fails, or the manufacturer specifically requires a reset. Reset procedures differ by model. Before removing a device from its app or resetting it, check what may be lost. Google warns, for example, that removing a Nest camera from the app may cause video history to be lost; save important clips first. Google and Ring both describe reset as an option for some cases, not an automatic first step. See Google’s reconnection guidance and Ring’s offline-device guidance.
