What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Neither category is inherently safer. Open-source code can be inspected, but that does not prove a particular download is authentic or its dependencies are safe. Browser extensions can be convenient, but their permissions may expose information on video sites or, if broad, across websites. Safety depends on the specific product, version, release source, data practices, and settings—not the category label.
What “safer” means for a video downloader
Compare the same risks for each product: what it can access, what information it sends, who maintains it, how its release can be verified, and what happens when you change settings or uninstall it. The reviewed official guidance covers Chrome and Chromium extensions and the yt-dlp project; it does not test every downloader or browser extension, or establish a head-to-head safety ranking.
- Access: Which websites, browser data, local files, or system capabilities can the tool reach?
- Data handling: What does it collect or transmit, and for what stated purpose?
- Provenance and maintenance: Can you identify the publisher or maintainer, inspect the source where available, and connect the installed release to a trustworthy distribution source?
- Configuration and updates: Do settings introduce extra risk, and do permissions or data practices change with updates?
- Recovery: What can removal undo, and what information may already have left your device?
What browser-extension permissions tell you
For a Chrome extension, the install prompt and permission settings show what access it is asking for. Google Chrome Help explains that access to all websites can allow an extension to read, request, or modify information on every page, while access limited to specific sites is narrower. Its guidance says, “The warning doesn’t mean the app is dangerous, just that it can be.” A warning describes the capability being granted; it is not a finding that the extension is malicious. Google Chrome Help: Permissions requested by apps and extensions.
Ask whether the requested access fits the advertised downloading feature. A broad permission merits scrutiny because it creates broader capability, but permission scope alone cannot tell you whether an extension misuses that access. The Chromium Project advises users to “look both at the permissions requested by the extension” and its privacy policy and other disclosures. Chromium Project: Extensions Security FAQ.

Store review and privacy disclosures are useful, not guarantees
Chrome Web Store policy requires developers to request the narrowest permissions needed for a product’s features and to disclose user-data practices. The policy states: “Request access to the narrowest permissions necessary to implement your Product’s features or services.” The Chrome Web Store also describes automated and manual review. These safeguards do not prove that every extension complies, that its behavior remains safe after every update, or that a particular listing has passed an independent audit. Chrome for Developers: Chrome Web Store Program Policies.
What open source does—and does not—show
Open source gives users and reviewers an opportunity to inspect code. It is not a safety certificate: source visibility by itself does not establish that an installed release corresponds to that source, that dependencies are safe, or that the software is maintained securely. Check the project’s release provenance, dependencies, update history, and security advisories alongside its code.
Rank #2
- Edit your videos and pictures to perfection with a host of helpful editing tools.
- Create amazing videos with fun effects and interesting transitions.
- Record or add audio clips to your video, or simply pull stock sounds from the NCH Sound Library.
- Enhance your audio tracks with impressive audio effects, like Pan, Reverb or Echo.
- Share directly online to Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms or burn directly to disc.
Configuration matters, too. The yt-dlp project documentation warns that certain compatibility options restore unsafe behavior, including an option that can enable remote code execution; it advises considering an issue report instead. This is a warning about particular options, not evidence that ordinary default use is unsafe. Avoid enabling undocumented or explicitly unsafe compatibility settings. yt-dlp documentation: Deprecated options.
A practical check before installing or updating
- Identify the exact product. Confirm its name, publisher or maintainer, current version, and distribution source; similarly named downloads may not have the same provenance.
- For an extension, review access and disclosures. Read the install prompt and permission settings, then compare the scope with the downloader’s feature. Read the privacy disclosure and data-use statement rather than treating a store listing as a complete audit.
- For open-source software, check the release chain. Review the source, how the release is connected to it, dependencies, recent maintenance, and any security advisories. Do not assume a visible repository makes every download authentic.
- Review changes after updates. Reconsider material changes to permissions or data practices instead of approving them automatically.
- Remove tools you no longer trust. Uninstalling can stop future access, but it cannot retract data already transmitted. Chromium also notes that scripts injected into open pages can continue running until you leave or refresh those pages. Chromium Project: Extensions Security FAQ.
How to choose between the two
Choose based on the particular product and your tolerance for its access and data practices. An extension may be a reasonable choice when its requested sites and permissions are limited to what its feature needs, its disclosures are clear, and its publisher and update history are credible. An open-source downloader may be a reasonable choice when you can verify its release source, assess its maintenance and dependencies, and avoid risky options. Neither set of checks proves a product is safe; they make the decision more informed.
