No phone case or camera protector can guarantee flare-free photos. To reduce the risk that an accessory makes things worse, choose one made for your exact phone, keep camera openings and nearby sensors unobstructed, and follow the phone maker’s guidance. If flare appears, clean the camera surface and try changing your angle before assuming the camera is defective.
Can a case or camera protector prevent lens flare?
Not completely. Lens flare and ghosting are optical artifacts that can appear when a camera faces a strong light source. Reflections and scattering within the camera’s optical system can create bright spots, arcs, halos, or washed-out areas; their presence alone does not prove that the camera is faulty.
A case may help keep the camera area clear of obstructions, but a lens protector adds another glass or film surface in front of the optics. That surface may affect image quality or contribute to reflections. The effect depends on the phone and accessory: available manufacturer guidance is model- and brand-specific, and there is no controlled comparison establishing a universally flare-proof material or brand.
What to check before buying an accessory
- Exact phone compatibility: Confirm the case or protector is designed for your specific phone model, not merely a similar-looking device.
- Clear camera openings: Check that the case cutout does not overlap any camera aperture. Avoid a lens film or cover that intrudes into the optical path.
- Nearby sensors: Make sure the accessory does not cover sensors around the rear cameras. On applicable Huawei phones, a film on a protruding lens or a non-official case can block a nearby sensor and trigger a warning.
- Manufacturer advice: Check support guidance for your particular phone. Huawei advises avoiding non-original protective cases or lens film in its flare troubleshooting. Samsung warns that unauthorized film covering a Galaxy camera lens may diminish image quality. These cautions apply to the respective manufacturers’ guidance; they do not establish that every third-party accessory causes flare.
When comparing a case with a separate camera protector, consider whether the case leaves the camera area open or adds a surface over it. A protector may offer physical coverage, but it also adds an optical surface; weigh that trade-off against your phone maker’s advice and the accessory’s exact fit.

Why bright lights create flare
Flare can arise from reflections within camera optics and from light interacting with surfaces around the lens. Huawei describes bright spots, arcs, halos, or petal-shaped spots in strong light as potentially involving reflections between the camera lens and rear-cover glass. Xiaomi describes arc-shaped flare as repeated reflections between camera lenses. Canon’s explanation of lens coatings also describes how surface reflections can produce ghosts and flare, and how coatings can reduce those reflections. These explanations clarify possible causes; they do not show that every phone or protector will behave the same way.
A camera lens hood can block some stray light entering from outside the frame, but a conventional camera hood is not a universal solution for phone cases. Even a good hood cannot block all stray light in real-world use.

What to do when flare appears
- Clean the camera surface. If it may have oil or smudges, gently wipe it with a clean, soft cloth. A cloth can remove surface grime; it cannot eliminate internal reflections or flare caused by a bright light source.
- Change the composition. Shift the phone slightly, reframe around the bright source, or avoid pointing directly toward it. A small angle change may alter the reflections that reach the sensor.
- Check for obstruction. Look for a case edge, lens cover, film, or other accessory overlapping a camera aperture or nearby sensor.
- Compare with and without the accessory. Use the same phone, camera, framing, and lighting, then take one image with the accessory fitted and another without it. This is a practical way to see whether the added surface may be contributing; it is not a published phone-specific test standard. Nikon’s general camera guidance likewise suggests testing without a filter when investigating ghosting.
