No—not as a supported Android Auto setup. Android Auto projects a compatible phone’s experience onto a compatible car or stereo display; Google does not document using a second Android phone as the receiver screen. You can still repurpose an old phone as a standalone screen for navigation apps, but that is different from Android Auto.
Why a second phone cannot act as the Android Auto screen
Android Auto is designed to run from a compatible Android phone to a compatible car or stereo display. Google’s Android for Cars overview describes the phone-based experience as projected onto compatible car screens, and its setup instructions cover connecting a phone to a car or stereo. Those instructions do not provide a supported mode for one phone to receive Android Auto from another.
That distinction matters if you have a spare phone: installing Android Auto on it, pairing it with your main phone, or connecting the two with a cable does not make it a documented receiver. Google’s pages also do not verify a current third-party emulator as a reliable alternative, so this guide cannot recommend one.
What you can do with the spare phone instead
You can use the old phone itself as a standalone navigation screen by opening a maps app on it. This does not project the other phone’s Android Auto interface, and apps, data, and settings on the spare phone remain separate. A suitable car phone mount is optional if you want to position it for that use; a mount changes placement, not Android Auto compatibility.

Before relying on the spare phone for navigation, make sure it can access the maps and location services you need. If the phone lacks an active data connection, check whether your chosen map app supports downloading maps for offline use; availability and features vary by app and region.
Use Android Auto on a compatible car or stereo
If your goal is Android Auto rather than a standalone phone display, connect your phone to a compatible car infotainment system or stereo. Google’s requirements distinguish wired and wireless setups:

These requirements are from Google’s Android Auto compatibility and setup page. Wireless support depends on both the phone and the car or stereo; meeting the phone requirement alone is not enough.
Check the car or stereo before connecting
A USB port does not prove a vehicle supports Android Auto. Google notes that not all cars with USB ports are compatible. Check the vehicle’s manual or the stereo maker’s compatibility information for the exact model, or consult Google’s compatibility guidance.

Set up a wired connection
- Park the car and turn on its infotainment system before setup.
- Confirm that the car or stereo supports Android Auto and that the phone meets the wired requirements in the table.
- Connect the phone directly with a high-quality USB cable. Google recommends a cable shorter than one metre (three feet) and advises against USB hubs and extensions.
- Follow the prompts shown on the phone and car display. Allow time for setup before driving.
Google’s cable advice and compatibility caveat are in its USB connection guidance.
Set up a wireless connection
- Park the car and turn on the infotainment system.
- Verify that both the phone and the car or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
- For first-time setup, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled while setup completes.
- Follow the prompts on both screens and finish setup before starting your drive.
Google’s setup page advises drivers to “Make sure your car is in park (P) with the infotainment system turned on, and allow time to set up Android Auto before you start your drive.” Follow local laws and pay attention to road and driving conditions.

Choose the right route for your goal
- Want to reuse the old phone as a map screen? Run a navigation app directly on that phone; it will not be an Android Auto receiver.
- Want Android Auto on the car display? Use a compatible phone with a compatible car or stereo, wired or wireless as supported.
- Does the vehicle lack Android Auto? Check whether a compatible stereo or receiver can be installed for that vehicle. That is a separate upgrade, not a way to convert the spare phone into a receiver.
