You can collect publicly accessible channel posts and the message details Telegram makes available—such as text, media, timestamps, links, and post view counts. But a public channel does not expose a list of subscribers or named viewers, and it does not automatically grant access to administrator statistics, every message through a bot, or permission to reuse the content.

What data is visible on a public Telegram channel?

Telegram describes channels as broadcast tools that can be public through a permanent URL. A channel page may show its title, description, public username or link, and other profile material that is visible to visitors. Public posts may expose their text, media, timestamps, links or entities, and other fields attached to each message. Which fields exist depends on the post and how you access it; not every post has every field. Telegram’s channel documentation describes public channels and how channel information is handled.

Telegram’s message schema includes fields such as view counts, forwards, replies, reactions, author or signature information, and media when those fields are present. These are properties of messages, not a guarantee that all such data is available for every post or access method. See the Telegram message reference.

Do post views show who viewed a channel post?

No. A channel post’s view count is a counter; Telegram’s documentation does not describe it as a list of named viewers. Views, forwards, replies, and reactions can provide aggregate or otherwise limited engagement signals, but they do not reveal a complete audience roster.

Telegram also offers a method to retrieve public forwards of a channel message. That can show matching messages in other public channels, but it does not account for every share, private forward, or person who saw the original. The method is documented in Telegram’s public-forwards reference.

Do not confuse channel view counts with read receipts. Telegram documents getMessageReadParticipants for groups and supergroups below a server-configured member threshold, with receipts retained for a server-configured period. That is not a general method for identifying viewers of public-channel posts. The read-participants method reference describes its scope.

What can a bot collect compared with a user client?

A bot and a logged-in Telegram user client do not have the same access. Telegram’s Bot FAQ says bots receive messages from channels where they are members. In groups, bot administrators and bots with privacy mode disabled receive a broader set of messages; privacy-enabled bots receive a narrower set. A bot that is not a channel member should not be assumed to read all of that channel’s history. Check Telegram’s Bot FAQ for the documented message-access rules.

A user client using Telegram’s client API has different methods and access conditions from the Bot API. For example, the channel view method is user-only and may return CHANNEL_PRIVATE if the user has not joined the channel. API access is method-specific, so “Telegram API access” is not one uniform permission level. See the channel view method reference.

Which information is restricted to admins or depends on configuration?

Detailed channel statistics require administrator access and a Telegram-provided can_view_stats permission flag. Telegram says the channel-size threshold is configured server-side, so there is no universal public subscriber cutoff to rely on. Statistics for supergroups are also permission-gated. Telegram’s statistics documentation describes these access conditions.

Nor should a public channel link be treated as a member directory. Telegram distinguishes channels from groups, and distinguishes supergroups from older basic groups. Supergroup participant lists load on demand and may be hidden by administrators; basic-group behavior differs. A channel’s public availability does not imply that its subscriber roster is visible. Telegram’s channel and participant documentation explains the distinction.

How does content protection limit collection?

Telegram’s content-protection feature is intended to keep channel or group content within the audience allowed by the chat. In supported clients, it prevents screenshots and copying, disables forwarding, and limits media saving. Telegram tells clients to treat protected content as restricted even when an individual message’s noforwards flag is absent; attempting to forward protected material produces a CHAT_FORWARDS_RESTRICTED error. The behavior is described in Telegram’s content-protection documentation.

These are restrictions enforced by Telegram-supported clients and APIs, not a guarantee that information can never be captured or reproduced by any other means. Respect the platform controls rather than treating public visibility or technical workarounds as permission to copy.

Does public availability mean you can keep or republish the data?

No automatic legal permission follows from being able to view a post. Whether a particular collection, storage, profiling, or republication is lawful depends on the collector’s purpose, location, intended audience, and other circumstances. Telegram’s platform documentation cannot settle that question for every jurisdiction or use.

Telegram’s EEA privacy policy says account screen names, profile pictures, and usernames are public. It also describes data bots may receive when people interact with them, including public account data, messages, shared-group participation, or a query sent to an inline bot. Telegram says third-party bot developers are independent from Telegram. Those statements describe Telegram’s service and bot interactions; they do not establish a third-party collector’s legal basis for unrelated scraping or reuse. See Telegram’s EEA privacy policy on bots.
