A robot vacuum may lightly touch a wall or baseboard as it follows an edge; on some models, that contact helps the robot track the boundary. Repeated hard impacts are different: the robot may be struggling to recognize the surface, approaching a feature its sensors do not detect, or dealing with dirty sensors or a bumper that does not move freely. The cause depends on the vacuum’s design and where the contact happens.
Is it normal for a robot vacuum to bump into walls?
Sometimes. Xiaomi says light contact during edge-cleaning is normal on its S40 Pro, which uses a mechanical bumper and wall-detection sensors. Xiaomi’s S40 guidance also describes occasional contact while edge-cleaning as normal. iRobot explains that a Roomba’s light-touch bumper can let it gently touch an obstacle before changing direction (iRobot Support).
That does not mean every collision is expected. A brief, gentle tap as the vacuum traces an edge is different from repeated forceful pushing, impacts that happen throughout a room, or a bumper that sticks. The manufacturer statements describe particular models and conditions, not a rule that applies to every robot vacuum.
Why does my robot vacuum keep hitting the baseboards?
The robot is following the edge by touch
Some vacuums use bumper contact as part of their edge-following behavior. If the taps are light and limited to wall edges, the robot may be probing the boundary to clean alongside it rather than failing to navigate. Check your model’s manual or support page for how its bumper and wall sensors are intended to work.

The wall finish may be difficult for its sensors
Sensor performance varies with the technology and the surface. Xiaomi says dark or reflective walls can affect infrared or proximity sensing on the S40. eufy notes that pure black or highly reflective metal can weaken LiDAR returns on the Omni C30 Edge, and that very dark or reflective surfaces—including mirrors, glass, and metal—can interfere with object recognition on the S1 Pro (C30 Edge guidance; S1 Pro guidance). These are model-specific limitations, not evidence that all black or reflective walls will confuse every vacuum.
A top-mounted sensor may not see the baseboard’s lower profile
A robot that relies on a sensor mounted high on its body may not detect a low feature until its bumper reaches it. LG explains that obstacles below the top LiDAR sensor on its Cord Zero R5 may instead be detected by the front bumper (LG USA Support). For the Omni C30 Edge specifically, eufy says a feature 5–11 cm above the floor may be treated as passable and recommends a no-go zone for affected locations. That measurement applies to that model only.

The map or room layout has changed
A robot may make more contact while mapping for the first time or after it has been moved to a new environment. Xiaomi calls out those situations for the S40. If the vacuum was recently relocated or the layout changed, let it map again as directed in its own manual rather than assuming the behavior signals a hardware fault.
How can I stop my robot vacuum from hitting the wall?
- Notice when and where the contact happens. If it is a light tap only during edge-cleaning, it may be normal for the model. If it repeatedly happens at one dark, reflective, glass, or metallic surface, sensing may be a factor. If the contact is forceful or occurs in many places, continue with the checks below.
- Clear the route. Move cords and fragile decorations out of the vacuum’s path. Xiaomi includes these among its precautions for the S40 Pro.
- Clean the sensor areas and check the bumper. Follow the cleaning method in your model’s manual; instructions differ by brand. Xiaomi advises checking that sensors and the bumper are clean and unobstructed. iRobot describes cleaning the Roomba bumper sensor area, while eufy recommends gently wiping sensor lenses with a soft cloth. Press the bumper gently and check that it moves and returns freely; do not cover sensor windows.
- Address a repeatable problem spot. If the robot collides at the same mapped location, create a no-go zone in its app if that model supports the feature. eufy recommends this for the C30 Edge condition described above; LG also lists a no-go zone as an option for its R5. Use the instructions for your specific app and vacuum.
- Get model-specific help if hard impacts continue. Contact the manufacturer if the bumper sticks or the vacuum keeps forcefully pushing after you have cleaned the sensing areas and addressed the problem location. Avoid disassembling it based on generic advice.
What the available measurements do—and do not—tell you
Manufacturers describe some model-specific sensing limits, but these figures are not comparable tests. eufy says the Omni C30 Edge may treat a feature 5–11 cm above the floor as passable; its S1 Pro guidance says objects under 2.5 cm in any dimension may be missed. iRobot’s Roomba guidance identifies objects under 50 mm wide as a potential sensing limitation. Each figure belongs to its named model and guidance, not to robot vacuums generally. The cited support sources do not provide a general statistic for how often robot vacuums hit walls or baseboards.
