Venus has more than one kind of haze. Sunlight-driven sulfur chemistry helps create its familiar sulfuric-acid cloud droplets, while a fine-particle layer beneath the main clouds has a different, still-incomplete explanation. A 2026 model proposes that microscopic cosmic dust could help sustain that lower haze and that iron from the dust may help explain Venus’s ultraviolet-absorbing material. That is a significant hypothesis, not a direct identification of the particles.
What does “haze” mean on Venus?
It is not one uniform veil. Venus has a thick main cloud system, haze or aerosol layers at other altitudes, and dark ultraviolet-absorbing streaks seen near the cloud tops. These features may be related, but they are not interchangeable.
| Feature | Where it is | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| Main cloud layer | ESA describes a cloud blanket about 20 kilometres deep, around 60 kilometres above the surface. | Its upper region consists mostly of tiny sulfuric-acid droplets. ESA says chemistry in the lower clouds is less completely understood. European Space Agency |
| Lower haze | Beneath the main cloud deck. | Entry probes detected involatile, submicrometre particles there. Nature’s April 16, 2026 highlight describes this layer as roughly 20 kilometres thick and says its particles contribute to cloud formation. Nature |
| Ultraviolet-absorbing streaks | At the cloud tops, where dark and bright patterns appear in ultraviolet observations. | The absorbing substance had not been established in NASA’s 2017 account. The 2026 dust study proposes a possible explanation, but does not amount to an in-situ chemical identification. NASA |
The lower haze is the main subject of the new cosmic-dust proposal. Finding a possible source for those particles does not, by itself, explain the sulfuric-acid cloud system or identify every material that absorbs ultraviolet light.
How does sulfur dioxide help make Venus’s clouds?
Sunlight breaks apart sulfur dioxide molecules in Venus’s middle atmosphere through photodissociation. The resulting chemistry produces sulfuric-acid molecules, which eventually form aerosol droplets in the clouds, according to the European Space Agency’s Venus Express explanation.

This established chemical pathway helps explain the planet’s acidic cloud aerosols, but it should not be assumed to produce every haze layer in the same way. For example, NASA’s account of a bright, smooth haze observed by Venus Express in 2007 noted that how water vapour and sulfur dioxide were lifted from lower levels was then unknown. NASA’s account of the observation illustrates that some details of how atmospheric material moves and forms particular layers remain open.
What is cosmic dust?
Cosmic dust is microscopic material from beyond Earth, including interplanetary and cometary particles. It is not a special type of sulfuric-acid droplet. Cometary dust can contain a mix of organic and mineral material, rather than a single substance. NASA Technical Reports Server

In the Venus study, cosmic dust is proposed as a continuing supply of seed particles and material that could become incorporated into the atmosphere. The proposal concerns particles entering Venus’s atmosphere; it does not mean that scientists have directly collected and identified incoming cosmic dust in the haze.
What does the 2026 cosmic-dust model propose?
In the peer-reviewed 2026 paper “A cosmic origin of Venus’ lower haze,” Hiroki Karyu and colleagues used a Venus cloud-microphysics model. Its abstract reports that a continuous influx of cosmic dust can sustain the lower-haze particle-size distribution measured by entry probes. The model also predicts metallic enrichment, including magnesium and iron, and identifies iron as a plausible source of the unidentified ultraviolet absorber. Nature Astronomy

The result connects two puzzles—the lower haze and the ultraviolet absorber—but the connection remains model-supported. NASA’s 2017 article quoted CUVE principal investigator Valeria Cottini saying that “the exact nature of the cloud top absorber has not been established.” The newer work offers a candidate explanation; it does not establish that the absorber has been chemically identified at Venus. What the model’s timescales mean
The paper reports minimum cosmic-influx timelines of 600,000 years for modeled cloud-top carbon concentration and 3,000 years for modeled iron concentration. These are model outputs describing the minimum time needed to yield those concentrations—not direct measurements of the haze’s age or proof of how long it has existed. Nature Astronomy

What is observed, and what is still a hypothesis?
- Observed: Venus has sulfuric-acid cloud aerosols, ultraviolet-dark cloud-top patterns, and a lower layer of fine particles detected by entry probes.
- Supported by established chemistry: Sunlight-driven sulfur dioxide chemistry produces sulfuric-acid molecules that eventually form cloud aerosols.
- Proposed by the 2026 model: Continuous cosmic-dust influx could sustain the lower haze’s particle distribution; dust-borne iron could contribute to the ultraviolet absorber.
- Not established by these findings: That cosmic dust is the sole origin of Venus’s haze, that it makes the planet’s sulfuric-acid clouds, or that iron has been directly confirmed as the cloud-top absorber.
Testing the proposal requires atmospheric measurements capable of distinguishing particle composition and tracing how particles vary across Venus’s cloud layers. Until then, cosmic dust is a plausible explanation for part of the puzzle, not a settled answer for every haze on the planet.
