No—not for every walk. For urban sightseeing and attraction visits, decide based on the surface you will actually encounter: waterproof walking boots with good tread may be enough on clear paths, while removable traction cleats can help on ordinary paths that are icy. Check local conditions before setting out. A glacier walk is different: follow an experienced guide’s instructions and use the technical equipment the operator specifies; ordinary walking cleats are not a substitute.
When are ice cleats useful?
Removable traction cleats—often sold as walking microspikes—are worth considering when current conditions indicate ice on a path you plan to walk. They fit over walking boots and can be taken off when the surface does not call for them. They may improve grip, but they do not guarantee safety.
Iceland Travel says crampons are “not always necessary,” but can add security and confidence on icy areas: Iceland Travel’s clothing advice. Here, that is best read as practical winter guidance, not a blanket rule for every route or a live report of trail conditions.
Match the equipment to the walk

Waterfalls, parks, and other visitor routes
A waterfall approach or park path can be slippery in winter, but the season alone does not tell you what the surface is like on the day. Vatnajökull National Park recommends crampons in winter conditions and directs visitors to check weather, roads, and destination information. That advice is specific to the park; it should not be treated as a forecast or universal equipment rule for routes elsewhere in Iceland. See the park’s seasonal guidance.

For a short sightseeing visit, carry cleats only if they fit your likely conditions and plans. If you do bring them, choose a removable pair compatible with your boots rather than wearing them indiscriminately on every surface. Follow signs and closures, and do not assume that traction equipment makes an unsafe route safe.
Glacier walks need a different level of gear
Do not walk onto a glacier tongue using ordinary walking cleats as your only protection. Iceland’s Environment Agency warns that glacier walking without crampons and other ice-climbing equipment is dangerous and recommends organized trips with experienced guides. Read its traveller safety guidance.

Boots and technical equipment serve different purposes. For example, IceTrek’s 2026 Laugavegur Trek brochure lists waterproof hiking boots for trekking and says technical glacier-day equipment, including crampons, is provided. That is a tour-specific inclusion, not a promise about other operators. Confirm equipment requirements and what is included with the company you book.
Check conditions before setting out
Use current local information rather than relying on the month or a general packing list. SafeTravel Iceland advises checking weather frequently—every day, even twice a day—and planning hikes to match your experience, equipment, and route. Vatnajökull National Park also points visitors to current weather, road, and destination details.

- Check SafeTravel’s hiking and trekking advice and alerts.
- Check the Icelandic weather forecast.
- Check road status if your route depends on driving, and look for destination or ranger updates.
- Respect closures and signs; turn back if conditions exceed your group’s ability.
Should you buy cleats before the trip?
That depends on your expected use and what is available locally. The reviewed information does not establish current rental inventory or comparative purchase and rental prices, so it cannot determine whether buying ahead or renting in Iceland is cheaper. If you expect to walk on icy ordinary paths, check that any cleats you buy fit your walking boots. For a glacier excursion, ask the operator what technical equipment is required and supplied instead of treating personal walking cleats as a substitute.
