Before Apple repairs or replaces your iPhone, make and verify a backup, then follow the preparation steps for your specific service route. Express Replacement, mail-in service, and an in-person appointment have different requirements—especially for erasing the phone, returning it, and turning off Find My.
Choose the service route before preparing your iPhone
Apple offers in-person service at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, mail-in service using a prepaid shipping box, and Express Replacement for eligible AppleCare customers. Availability and terms depend on your location and service request. Apple inspects the device to provide a personalized estimate; fees and options can depend on the model, coverage, damage assessment, parts availability, and local terms. Check your service confirmation and local instructions rather than assuming you qualify for a replacement or a particular fee. See Apple Service and Repair for iPhone and Apple’s Express Replacement Service overview.
| Service route | Preparation focus | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Express Replacement | Back up first; transfer data and mobile service to the replacement; then erase and return the original as directed. | Eligibility, return-kit instructions, local deadline, and any applicable card hold. |
| Mail-in service | Back up and follow the shipping and device-preparation instructions supplied for the repair. | What to send, the packaging and label to use, and any Find My instructions. |
| In-person appointment | Back up, finish syncing, prepare Wallet and Apple Cash, and follow the applicable Find My instructions. | Whether an appointment is required and what device, accessories, receipt, or identification to bring. |
Back up the iPhone and confirm it is complete
Apple supports backing up an iPhone to iCloud or to a computer. Choose a backup method you can access when the phone is returned or replaced, and check that the backup finished before handing over or erasing the device. Apple’s Express Replacement preparation guide links to backup options. For an appointment, Apple also advises checking that the iCloud features you use have finished syncing; syncing and a device backup are separate steps, so confirm both where applicable.
- iCloud: Make an iCloud backup and verify its completion before service.
- Mac or PC: Create a computer backup and make sure the computer is available when you restore.
- Before an appointment: Check that the iCloud data and services you rely on have finished syncing, in addition to confirming your backup.
Prepare for an in-person service appointment
Use Apple’s appointment checklist and the instructions in your service confirmation. Apple advises completing as many steps as possible if the iPhone is unresponsive or you cannot complete a step; some steps may be handled online.

- Back up the iPhone and confirm the backup completed.
- Check that the iCloud features you use have finished syncing.
- Turn off Apple Cash and remove Wallet cards and passes, as directed by Apple.
- Review Settings for Parts and Service History and resolve any “Finish Repair” state if one appears.
- Follow the Find My instructions for your particular device and repair. Apple’s general appointment page says Find My may need to be turned off, but eligible newer workflows can differ.
- Bring the iPhone and any accessories needed for help, a sales receipt if available, and government-issued identification. Check whether the location requires an appointment.
Keep account credentials private. Apple says, “Never give your Apple Account password, device passcode, or account security details to anyone else.” If software support requires access to the device, Apple says to remain present while the technician has access.
Follow the correct Find My instructions
Do not treat “turn off Find My” as a universal rule. Apple’s service appointment guidance gives that traditional instruction, while its Ready for Repair or Trade In guidance describes an eligible flow that can keep Find My on for supported processes. The newer flow applies to eligible devices updated to software version 27 or later; eligibility and scope depend on the device and service. Follow the directions Apple or the Authorized Service Provider gives for your specific request. If you are told to turn Find My off, do so using Apple’s instructions before service.

Prepare and return an Express Replacement iPhone
Start these steps only after Apple has arranged Express Replacement. The replacement process has a different order from an in-person repair: transfer your data and mobile service first, then erase and return the original iPhone.
- Back up the original iPhone to iCloud, a Mac, or a PC, and verify the backup completed.
- When the replacement arrives, transfer your data and mobile service to it, following Apple’s supplied instructions.
- Erase the original iPhone by going to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Power down the original iPhone.
- Put only the iPhone in the smaller box, then place that box in the larger supplied box. Apple warns: “Don’t include anything else – such as a phone case, power adapter, USB cable or other accessory. If you include extra items in the box, they won’t be returned.”
- Use the courier and return label specified in the kit, follow any model-specific shipping directions, and obtain a receipt or proof of collection.
Apple’s Express Replacement materials describe a card hold that is released after the original device is processed and the issue is confirmed as covered. They also state that if the original is not returned within 10 business days, or is ineligible because of unauthorized modifications or severe damage, the hold may be charged. These are terms in Apple’s current Express Replacement instructions, not a universal guarantee for every region or service arrangement; check the local materials supplied with your replacement.

Restore your data after service
A serviced iPhone may have been erased. During setup, you can choose an iCloud backup or restore a computer backup using Finder or Apple Devices; iTunes applies to specified older configurations. Apple’s restore guide explains the process. Select the backup by date and size, then keep the iPhone connected while restoration completes.
If you set up the phone as new and later decide to restore an older iCloud backup, Apple says you must erase the iPhone and restore it. Apple also warns that newer backups made after setting up as new can overwrite earlier saved backups. If preserving a particular backup matters, check its date before proceeding and avoid creating a newer backup that could replace it.
