You can move your AT&T number and eSIM to a compatible replacement iPhone either during iPhone setup or afterward. If your old iPhone is available, the nearby-phone transfer is usually the most direct route; if it is not, use AT&T’s account-based Manage my SIM options or contact support if you are an AT&T Prepaid customer.
Choose the transfer path that matches your situation

AT&T says an eSIM can be moved between two eSIM-compatible devices. The exact prompts can differ by iPhone model and iOS version, so follow the screens on your phones rather than expecting identical wording. See AT&T’s iPhone 15 Quick Start instructions or the guide for your model.
Transfer the eSIM during initial iPhone setup
Use this route if you are still setting up the replacement and have the old iPhone. Keep both phones together throughout the transfer.
- Turn on the replacement iPhone and begin its setup. When prompted, bring the old iPhone nearby and continue from the old phone’s Set Up New iPhone prompt.
- Authenticate the connection as instructed on the screens. AT&T’s iPhone 15 guide describes confirming the number and, where requested, the applicable ZIP code.
- Choose the cellular plan or number to transfer and approve activation when prompted. Keep the devices near each other while the plan activates.
- Continue through the remaining iPhone setup screens. Confirm the replacement can connect to AT&T cellular service once activation finishes.
AT&T identifies iOS 11 or later on both devices as the Quick Start requirement. Account verification or a number confirmation may also appear, and the sequence can vary. For model-specific screens, use AT&T’s setup guide.

Transfer after the replacement iPhone is already set up
You do not have to erase or set up the replacement again to try the nearby transfer. On the new iPhone:
- Open Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular. If that option is not shown, look for Add eSIM below the active plan.
- Tap Transfer From Nearby iPhone, then follow the prompts on both phones. Keep them close and connected to Wi-Fi until the process completes.
- If the replacement displays a verification code, enter it on the old iPhone. Continue through the transfer or number confirmation screens and approve the transfer.
- Wait for the new plan to activate before relying on cellular service on the replacement.
AT&T advises using the latest released software and a secure screen lock. Its iPhone 16 Pro instructions cover the after-setup path; its iPhone 16 Plus guide also specifies Wi-Fi for nearby transfer.

If the old iPhone is unavailable or nearby transfer fails
AT&T documents a self-service account route through Manage my SIM. Connect the replacement to Wi-Fi, sign in to your AT&T account, and follow the prompts for the line.
- Open AT&T’s eSIM troubleshooting and transfer page and choose Manage my SIM.
- Choose Switch or Switch devices to change the device associated with the line, then follow the account prompts.
- If the eSIM was deleted or needs to be downloaded again, choose Get a new eSIM and then Get started.
This is an AT&T account-based way to move or reissue the line’s eSIM, not an instruction to purchase a second wireless plan. AT&T’s FAQ was last updated December 24, 2025; account eligibility and the exact on-screen labels may vary.

AT&T Prepaid customers without the old phone
AT&T Prepaid’s guidance says customers who no longer have the old iPhone, or have reset it, should contact Prepaid customer support to complete the transfer. That instruction is specific to Prepaid; the cited public guidance does not establish that this support route is mandatory for every postpaid customer. See the AT&T eSIM FAQ for the account options.
If your old iPhone uses a physical SIM
AT&T says iPhone 14 series and later use eSIM. If the old phone has a physical SIM, use AT&T’s bring-your-own-device process to activate an eSIM on the replacement or move the line to its eSIM. The replacement will not have cellular service on that line until the eSIM is activated or the line is transferred. AT&T explains this in its iPhone setup and eSIM guidance.

Check replacement iPhone compatibility before transferring
If the replacement was not purchased from AT&T, the carrier says it must work on AT&T’s network, must not be reported lost or stolen, and must be unlocked from its previous provider. Check the exact model and line’s eligibility before counting on a transfer. AT&T lists these conditions in its eSIM troubleshooting FAQ.
