As of October 4, 2026, Copilot in Excel is the better-supported choice for turning data into a report today. Microsoft documents how it can analyze and edit a workbook, create charts and PivotTables, and summarize insights. Excel Canvas is described as a forthcoming feature for building reports that refresh when workbook data changes, but its rollout was still expected later in October. If you need a report view that stays current, Canvas may be the better fit once it is available to you; there is not yet enough evidence to say which produces better-quality reports.

What is the difference between Copilot in Excel and Excel Canvas?

Copilot in Excel is an assistant for working with a workbook. Microsoft documents using it to generate formulas and data, edit worksheets, create charts and PivotTables, format or filter data, and identify trends or outliers. Microsoft says generated charts and PivotTables can remain editable and linked to their source data. Copilot offers edit, plan, and chat interactions: edit makes workbook changes, plan presents a structured approach for review, and chat keeps the response in the conversation. Microsoft’s Copilot in Excel overview describes these features.

Excel Canvas is described in an archived copy of Microsoft 365 Message Center item MC1485411 as a Copilot capability that turns workbook data into a report with visualizations, metrics, and insights. The announcement says users can refine the report with natural-language instructions and that it updates as underlying workbook data changes. The archive reported worldwide availability expected by late October 2026; on October 4, that was a prospective rollout, not confirmation that Canvas was live or available to every user. The feature description is in the archived Canvas announcement.

“Excel Canvas” here means the announced Excel reporting feature, not Copilot in Power Apps canvas apps. That is a separate Power Apps feature with its own scope and limitations; see Microsoft Learn’s page about Copilot in canvas apps.

Get a report view that reflects workbook data changes Excel Canvas, when available to you The archived announcement describes automatic updates, but the rollout was still prospective as of October 4, 2026, and final availability details were not established.
Need source-level traceability Depends on the workflow and data source Some web and work-source responses may include citations. Do not assume every chart or Canvas element has source-level traceability.

There is no sourced hands-on comparison or benchmark establishing that one tool is more accurate, polished, or useful. The choice therefore turns on the workflow you need—editing workbook elements, reviewing analysis in chat, or viewing a report that refreshes—as well as whether you can access the feature and verify its output.

How to make a report with Copilot in Excel

  1. Check access. Open Excel and look for Copilot. Microsoft says it may be unavailable if your subscription does not include it or your organization’s settings prevent access; owning Excel alone does not guarantee access. The Canvas announcement did not establish final license or tenant requirements. See Microsoft’s Copilot overview and the archived Canvas announcement.
  2. Ask for a specific report element. Describe the data, grouping, and output you want. Microsoft’s examples include a summary by reporting date, sales by month and category, or a line chart showing change over time. You can also ask for sorting, filtering, or highlighting. See Microsoft’s guide to visualizing data with Copilot.
  3. Select the interaction that fits. Use edit when you want Copilot to change the workbook, plan when you want to review a proposed sequence before work starts, and chat when you want the analysis to remain in the conversation. Microsoft’s Copilot FAQ explains the modes.
  4. Check data access and permissions. Copilot may use web, work, or federated sources. Microsoft’s documentation says work search is for commercial Copilot customers and asks users to approve specific work sources. Federated connectors require consent, use the user’s credentials and permissions, and may be restricted by administrators. Availability varies; see Microsoft’s Copilot data-source documentation.
  5. Verify the report before sharing it. Check the source range, formulas, totals, reporting period, units, chart labels, and whether the written conclusions follow from the data. These are practical checks in light of Microsoft’s warning that generated insights and formulas can be inaccurate or inappropriate. Microsoft advises: “Review, edit, and verify anything Copilot creates before you rely on it.” The FAQ contains the warning.

Does every Copilot analysis create a live report?

No. Microsoft’s separate direct-answer analysis experience does not modify the workbook and may return static tables or image visualizations that are not refreshable. That limitation applies to this direct-answer experience; it should not be generalized to all Copilot-created charts or PivotTables, which Microsoft describes as potentially editable and linked to source data. See Microsoft’s documentation for direct answers.

What is not yet clear about Excel Canvas?

The available announcement supports a description of the intended feature, not a confirmed account of its final implementation. As of October 4, 2026, the archived Message Center item was the available source for Canvas; a primary Microsoft page establishing its final feature set, supported platforms, licensing, or completed rollout was not established. Check the archived announcement alongside current official Microsoft release information before making a deployment decision. The announcement’s late-October timing was an expected worldwide rollout, not a guarantee for every tenant or user.
