Re-encode the video with a constant-quality setting, test a representative section, and inspect the result before converting the whole file. For 1080p, HandBrake’s version 1.6.0 documentation suggests starting at RF 20–24; that range is a starting point, not a guarantee of a particular size or invisible quality loss. If you must meet a strict file-size limit, target a bitrate instead and verify the finished file.
Choose the encoding approach that fits your goal
There is no setting that guarantees a smaller file with no visible change for every source. The result depends on the footage and encoder, so use a short test encode and compare it with the original at normal viewing size.
| Your priority | Use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Keep quality as the main priority | Constant quality (RF or CRF) | The encoder varies bitrate to pursue the selected quality level, so final size can vary. HandBrake’s quality guidance explains its RF scale. |
| Meet a size or bandwidth constraint | Target bitrate or constrained-quality encoding | Bitrate targeting is more direct when output size or bandwidth is constrained, but check the finished file. See FFmpeg’s documentation for its rate-control options. |
How to compress a 1080p video in HandBrake
- Keep the original. Make a separate compressed copy so you can compare it and retry with different settings.
- Open the video in HandBrake. If broad sharing compatibility matters, choose a suitable MP4 preset. HandBrake describes its Web presets as using the broadly compatible MP4 container; the exact preset choices can vary by HandBrake version. See HandBrake’s official preset documentation.
- Choose a video encoder. H.264 is the conservative choice for broad playback compatibility. H.265 is an option only if the devices or service where you will play the file support it and you can verify the output. The cited guidance does not establish that H.265 always makes a smaller file at equal perceived quality.
- Set constant quality for a first test. HandBrake’s version 1.6.0 documentation suggests RF 20–24 for 1080p Full HD. Encode a representative section. If it looks worse than you want, lower the RF value; if it looks acceptable but is still too large, cautiously raise it and test again. A lower-quality setting may reduce size, but can also make the image visibly worse. See HandBrake’s quality guidance.
- Use bitrate control if the size limit is firm. Set a target bitrate or use constrained-quality encoding as appropriate for your workflow, then check the completed file against the limit. FFmpeg documents CRF, constrained-quality and target-bitrate controls, but the exact options depend on the encoder and installed build: FFmpeg documentation.
- Keep the source frame rate unless you have a reason to change it. For YouTube uploads, the platform recommends using the frame rate at which the content was recorded. Its guidance is platform-specific, not a universal rule for every local video. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
- Review the exported copy before replacing anything. Watch it at normal viewing size and check the audio, dimensions, frame rate, and container. Keep the original until you are satisfied with the result.
How to judge a test encode
Compare the same section of the source and compressed copy at normal viewing size. Look for visible changes in detail, motion, gradients, and dark areas, and listen for audio problems. If the sample fails your quality bar, adjust the setting and test again rather than assuming the same RF or CRF number will work for every clip.
RF and CRF values are encoder-specific. HandBrake warns that x264, x265, and SVT-AV1 do not share an interchangeable quality scale; an RF/CRF number is not a reliable way to compare different encoders. Compare the actual sample outputs instead. See HandBrake’s quality documentation.

Preserve the source’s useful characteristics
Reducing file size does not require lowering the resolution or changing the frame rate. Start by re-encoding while keeping the source’s 1080p dimensions and frame rate, then change them only if the destination or your own requirements call for it. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends matching the recorded frame rate and provides separate guidance for interlaced footage, including deinterlacing. For YouTube-specific settings, consult YouTube’s upload recommendations.
Do not reduce audio bitrate merely because the video is 1080p: YouTube notes that audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution. That advice concerns YouTube playback; it does not prescribe an audio setting for every export.

Why there is no dependable savings percentage
The official guidance cited here does not establish a typical percentage reduction for 1080p files. Output size varies with the source, encoder, quality target, and bitrate settings. A short sample and a check of the final file are more useful than assuming a preset will deliver a particular reduction.
