Then check the security’s market status and your connection. A stale display does not by itself tell you whether trading is halted, whether the feed is broken, or whether an order can be placed.
What a stale or missing quote can mean
“Stale” is a useful warning, not a diagnosis. A number that has not changed may be old by design, the last available quote, or an update that stopped unexpectedly. A missing bid or ask may also mean no current quote is available; it should not silently be replaced with an older value presented as current.

What to do when a quote stops updating
- Read the quote status and timestamp. Look beside the price for wording such as “Live,” “Delayed,” “Frozen,” or “No current quote.” Check when the displayed quote was updated, not just when you opened the screen. App labels and locations vary.
- Check the market session and instrument status. Confirm whether the relevant market is open and whether the security has a halt or delayed opening notice. A scheduled closure or halt is different from a failed connection.
- Check your app and connection. Confirm that the app is online and that other screens or instruments update. If the app offers a refresh or reconnect control, use it once and check whether the timestamp advances; repeated refreshing cannot restore a provider feed that is down.
- Check the data mode and entitlement. If the quote is labeled delayed, frozen, or unavailable, consult the app’s data disclosure or contact the broker to confirm what data mode your account receives for that instrument. Do not infer that a subscription is missing solely because one price has not changed.
- Pause before relying on the displayed price. If the status remains unclear, avoid using that number as if it were a live market price. Check the broker’s service notices or contact support before making a time-sensitive decision.
Can you place an order while the price is stale?
There is no single answer across trading apps. A broker may block, accept, queue, or route an order under its own rules and system design. The app should explain what will happen before submission when current data is unavailable or a halt is active. Do not assume an order will be canceled automatically just because a quote is stale.
A displayed last price is not a promise of an execution at that price. FINRA’s Regulatory Notice 21-12 discusses execution delays and order-handling disclosures, noting that high volume can delay executions and that an execution may occur away from the displayed market. Its guidance says disclosures are particularly important for investors accustomed to rapid executions. For halt-related information and order handling, FINRA’s investor guidance recommends that customers be informed about halts and pending or new orders; trading in the stock is prohibited while an applicable halt is in effect.

If you are responsible for the app’s data display
Do not use one generic “data unavailable” message for every condition. Users need to know whether the value is live, delayed by design, frozen at the last available quote, missing, or affected by a known market event. Pair the status with a timestamp and, when relevant, the provider-reported delay. Do not rely on color alone, and avoid styling a frozen number like a current executable quote.
Distinguish feed health from market status
Represent a provider interruption separately from a known halt or delayed opening. FINRA describes halts as market events, including halts that permit important news to be disseminated, and opening delays that can allow orders to accumulate and address an imbalance. If the app cannot verify the market status, show that it is unknown instead of guessing.

Use the provider’s integrity signals
Monitor the signals defined by the specific feed, which can include message arrival times, provider or event timestamps, heartbeats, and sequence continuity. Cboe’s feed specification documents feed-specific heartbeat and sequence behavior. Cboe filing material hosted by the SEC describes connection-loss handling intended to mitigate stale-quote risks. These are examples, not universal requirements for every provider or client.
Recover and reconcile before showing healthy data
After a reconnect or sequence gap, follow the provider’s documented replay, snapshot, or resubscription process when available. Reconcile recovered state before clearing a degraded-data warning. The precise recovery method depends on the feed; there is no single recovery algorithm established for all providers.

How to choose a stale-data threshold
No universal stale-age threshold is established across instruments, providers, and trading sessions. Choose an explicit product policy that fits the provider’s service and the instrument’s expected update behavior, and identify it as the app’s policy—not an exchange or regulatory rule unless a specific rule or contract says otherwise. A single timeout may be unsuitable for both an actively trading instrument and one with little activity.
- Document the freshness policy by provider, data mode, instrument, and session.
- Test how the app behaves when data is delayed, frozen, disconnected, halted, or missing.
- Make the threshold and resulting status visible enough that users can distinguish product policy from market status.
- Define what order entry does in each degraded-data state and disclose that behavior before the user submits an order.

- Data mode and entitlement: Which live, delayed, frozen, or delayed-frozen modes are available, and how does the provider identify each one?
- Feed integrity: What heartbeat, sequence, gap-recovery, and reconnect behavior does the specific feed document?
- Market status: Can the app receive halt and opening-delay information, and how does it indicate when that status cannot be confirmed?
- Order handling: What happens to pending and new orders during a data interruption, halt, or high-volume period, and where is that explained to customers?
