Use Steam’s Remote Play performance overlay while reproducing the stutter. If its cyan network-time line spikes, focus first on Wi-Fi interference and bandwidth; if network time stays stable, test host encoding, client decoding, and game load. Change one setting at a time and compare the result—no single setting fixes every setup.

1. Use the performance overlay to identify the bottleneck

Start a stream and watch the performance overlay while the problem occurs. Steam’s Network / Connectivity guidance says large spikes in the cyan network-time line indicate highly variable network time, which commonly coincides with video stuttering or freezing. Treat that as a clue to investigate the network, not proof that every other kind of stutter has one specific cause.

You can enable the overlay from the client’s advanced streaming settings. Steam also describes enabling it before a stream in Steam Link settings, after starting a stream in Big Picture settings, or through the Steam overlay. Keep the overlay visible during each test so you can compare what changed.

2. If network time spikes, reduce interference and bandwidth demand

Wire the host PC to the router

Valve identifies wireless interference as a common cause of performance problems and recommends connecting the host computer directly to the router with Ethernet. This reduces the host’s reliance on Wi-Fi, though it will not address encoding, decoding, game performance, or latency elsewhere on the network path. Pause other heavy wireless activity while testing, too: other devices sending and receiving data can compete with the stream.

Lower stream quality or limit bandwidth

In the client’s streaming quality settings, try Balanced or Fast. These options reduce bandwidth use at the cost of visual quality. You can also set a bandwidth limit and adjust it gradually. Steam’s support guidance describes starting at 3 Mbit/s, then increasing until hitches appear and backing off. That is a troubleshooting starting point, not a universal target; the useful setting depends on resolution, frame rate, network conditions, and other traffic.

Prioritize traffic and update router firmware

If your router supports QoS or bandwidth-priority controls, try prioritizing the host PC and streaming client. Steam also provides Prioritize Network Traffic under Steam > Settings > Remote Play > Advanced Host Options. Valve notes that some routers have bugs handling Remote Play UDP traffic, so install current router firmware before considering replacement equipment. Steam’s Suggested Network Settings page also advises keeping the host and router ventilated because overheating can reduce performance.

3. If network time is stable, test video processing

Encoding turns the host PC’s game output into a stream; decoding reconstructs it on the client. Either stage can be a bottleneck even when the network-time line looks steady. Steam’s Remote Play FAQ describes enabling hardware encoding in the host’s Remote Play advanced options and hardware decoding on the client. It also suggests trying the alternative of disabling host hardware encoding if problems continue.

These are diagnostic alternatives, not a blanket instruction to turn every hardware option on or off. GPU, driver, and client support differ. Change one control at a time, check the detailed performance overlay for the active encoder or decoder, and compare the stream before making another change.

4. Test whether the game itself is overloading the setup

Lower the game’s resolution as a controlled test. It can reduce workload, but also reduces image detail. If needed, try turning off vertical sync and compare how the game looks and feels on your setup. These suggestions come from a Steam-hosted Remote Play Together FAQ published by All in! Games in 2019; treat them as experiments from that FAQ’s context, not as guaranteed fixes for every current Remote Play game.

5. Update software when the symptoms point that way

Install current graphics drivers from the GPU vendor if you are seeing performance problems, graphical glitches, or black screens. Driver updates are not a proven cure for every network-related stutter, so use them alongside the overlay-based diagnosis rather than as a substitute for it. Likewise, check ventilation if performance worsens as the host or router heats up.

Choose changes by the symptom and tradeoff

Change Most relevant when Tradeoff or limitation
Connect the host to the router by Ethernet Network-time spikes or suspected Wi-Fi interference Requires a cable run; does not solve host/client processing bottlenecks.
Choose Balanced or Fast, or reduce the bandwidth limit The stream is competing for limited or variable network capacity Lower bandwidth can mean lower visual quality; the suitable limit varies by setup.
Change host encoding or client decoding Network time is stable but the stream still stutters Results vary by GPU, driver, and client; test alternatives one at a time.
Lower game resolution or test V-Sync off You suspect game workload or presentation settings contribute Lower resolution loses image detail; V-Sync changes presentation behavior.

A practical order for testing

  1. Enable the performance overlay and reproduce the stutter.
  2. If cyan network-time spikes appear, connect the host to the router with Ethernet, pause heavy wireless traffic, then test lower quality or a bandwidth limit.
  3. If network time remains stable, test host hardware encoding and client hardware decoding individually, checking the detailed overlay.
  4. Try lower game resolution and, if needed, V-Sync off as separate experiments.
  5. Update router firmware and relevant graphics drivers; check ventilation when heat could be affecting performance.
  6. After every individual change, repeat the same scenario and compare the overlay and visible stutter. Keep a change only if it improves the result.
