No—Windows hibernation writes data to an SSD, but that fact alone does not mean normal use will wear out the drive. Windows saves system state to a hibernation file on the primary system drive when it hibernates. Microsoft’s documentation explains that process, but does not give a universal write amount per hibernation or establish how much it shortens any SSD’s life.

How hibernation writes to an SSD

During a hibernate transition, Windows saves operating-system and user state to a hibernation file on the primary system drive, then powers down. If that drive is an SSD, saving the state involves writes to it. Windows compresses the saved state, according to Microsoft’s system power states documentation.

The hibernation file’s configured capacity is not a count of how much data each hibernate transition writes. Microsoft lists default sizes of 40% of physical memory for a full hibernation file and 20% for a reduced file; those are configuration values, not measured per-session write volumes. The documentation does not establish that Windows writes the entire configured file on every hibernation.

How many writes does hibernation make?

There is no general figure in the Microsoft sources for the bytes written by a typical hibernation, and they do not quantify SSD wear from hibernation. The actual write volume cannot be inferred from the hibernation file’s configured size alone. Microsoft’s transition-performance documentation includes a “Hiberfile Write Duration” metric, which measures time spent writing the file for performance assessment—not a universal byte count or a measure of SSD lifespan.

To assess an individual drive’s endurance, you would need evidence specific to its model, workload, and actual writes. Microsoft discusses SSD endurance using measures such as terabytes written (TBW) and drive writes per day (DWPD) in its SSD endurance overview, but that is general context, not a measurement of hibernation’s impact.

Hibernate, sleep, shutdown, and Fast Startup are different

Option What happens to the session Power while away Return behavior
Sleep The session stays in volatile memory. More than hibernation. Resumes quickly.
Hibernate Windows saves system context to a hibernation file, then powers down. Less than sleep. Loads the saved state; resume is slower than sleep.
Full shutdown The session is torn down rather than preserved for resuming. The PC is off. Starts a new session.
Fast Startup Windows logs off the user and saves a reduced state to the hibernation file. Not stated in the cited documentation. It is a reduced hibernation transition, not full hibernation or a full shutdown.

Microsoft describes hibernation as using less power than sleep while returning you to where you left off, though not as quickly. On a mobile device that will be unused for an extended period without charging, Microsoft recommends considering hibernation. See Microsoft’s shutdown, sleep, and hibernation guidance. Technical distinctions among hibernation, Fast Startup, and related states are described in Microsoft’s system sleeping states documentation.

Check the hibernation file type in Windows

Microsoft documents powercfg /a for checking available power states and powercfg /h /type for checking or changing the hibernation file type. The full file supports Hibernate, hybrid sleep, and Fast Startup; the reduced file supports Fast Startup. Availability of power states can depend on hardware and configuration.

  1. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
  2. Run powercfg /a to see which sleep states are available on the PC.
  3. Run powercfg /h /type to check the hibernation file type. To change the type, use the documented form powercfg /h /type full or powercfg /h /type reduced, as appropriate for the feature you need.

Hybrid sleep combines a sleep state with a hibernation file so the saved state can be recovered if power is lost while the device is sleeping. Its availability and behavior vary by hardware and configuration. Microsoft’s idle-timer documentation covers Windows behavior for display, sleep, and hibernate timers.
