To install screws without creating leaks, use the fastening pattern and screw specified for your exact roofing panel and the support beneath it. Drive each screw square to the panel so its sealing washer compresses evenly—snug enough to seal, but not crushed or split. Corrugated panels do not all take screws in the same place: one manufacturer’s guide calls for fastening along each rib, while another specifies the flat.
Find the fastening pattern for your exact panel
Do not assume screws always belong on the corrugation crest or always in the flat. The instructions differ even between guides for 7/8-inch corrugated panels: S3 Metals says to fasten along each rib and at each purlin, while Metal Panels Inc.’s guide shows fasteners in the flat. Those are directions for different systems, not interchangeable options. Identify the panel profile and follow its manufacturer’s installation guide for screw location and pattern.
The same guide controls row spacing and other layout details. S3 Metals refers installers to its maximum recommended row spacing; it does not establish one spacing number for all corrugated roofing. Wind exposure and the project’s applicable code requirements may also affect the layout.
Match the screw to the support below the panel
A screw must suit both the panel system and the substrate it engages. For its system, S3 Metals lists #10 woodfast screws for dimensional lumber, #14 woodfast screws for plywood or OSB, and Tek screws for metal purlins. These are examples from that guide, not a universal bill of materials. Choose screw length and type from the instructions for the actual support; the guide gives different minimum penetration examples for plywood/OSB and dimensional lumber.

Use roofing fasteners with the sealing washer specified by the panel system. S3 Metals calls for EPDM sealing washers on roof and wall fasteners. Check that the selected screw and washer are compatible with the panel and substrate, and that the screw will achieve the required engagement.
Drive each screw square and seat the washer evenly
- Position the screw at the specified location. Follow the panel guide’s fastening pattern and ensure the screw will engage the intended support.
- Hold the driver perpendicular to the panel. Metal Panels Inc.’s technical guidance says to keep the fastener perpendicular and remove drill shavings from beneath the washer before seating it.
- Drive until the washer seals, then stop. The washer should be compressed evenly. A loose washer may not seal; an over-driven screw can damage the washer or deform the panel. Metal Panels Inc. warns that a dimple from over-driving can collect water and contribute to leaks.
- Check the finished fastener. Look for a washer that sits squarely rather than rolling out, splitting, or appearing crushed. Do not leave loose screws that missed their intended purlin; follow the panel maker’s instructions for correcting a misplaced fastener.
Controlled driving helps prevent under- or over-driving. S3 Metals recommends a 2,000-rpm depth-sensing nose-piece screw gun for its installation guidance. Metal Panels Inc. recommends torque control appropriate to the fastener, hole, and material. Neither recommendation should be treated as a universal tool setting for other panels or equipment.

Handle underlayment, laps, and site cleanup as specified
- Install approved roofing underlayment as required by local code and the panel instructions.
- S3 Metals advises lapping panels away from prevailing wind where possible. Its guide calls for stitch screws on panel laps at a maximum of 12 inches on center; use that spacing only when following that system’s instructions.
- Lap and seal corrugated panels according to the product guide and roof pitch. Metal Panels Inc.’s preliminary 7/8-inch corrugated guide specifies one corrugation of overlap with butyl tape when pitch is greater than 3:12, and two corrugations below 3:12. These are that guide’s directions, not a general rule for every panel.
- Clean metal drill particles from the work area daily. S3 Metals recommends this to limit rust staining.
Metal Panels Inc.’s cited 7/8-inch guide warns against installing that panel on a roof below 1:12, where heavy rainfall may pool and lead to leaks. This is a product-specific slope limit; check the instructions for the panel being installed.

- Every screw follows the exact panel guide’s location and pattern.
- Each screw is appropriate for the supporting material and has the specified penetration and engagement.
- Washers sit squarely and evenly compressed, with no visible damage or panel dimpling.
- Lap direction, overlap, tape, and stitch-screw spacing match the product instructions and relevant site requirements.
- Fasteners have not missed their intended support, and drill shavings have been cleared away.
If an installed roof is already leaking, these installation instructions alone do not establish the cause or a reliable repair sequence. The relevant details include the panel profile, substrate, roof pitch, and leak location; use the manufacturer’s instructions for that specific system or consult a qualified roofing professional.
