Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a hard drive is clicking, grinding, repeatedly spinning up, or showing other obvious physical distress, shut it down and do not keep restarting it. Seagate advises avoiding another power-up and contacting a professional recovery service for unusual noises or obvious distress. If the drive is still responsive and has no severe physical symptoms, make a copy promptly; copying is an attempt to preserve data, not a repair.
First decide whether to power the drive down
Power it off if it sounds or behaves mechanically wrong
Clicking, grinding, repeated spin-up, or other obvious physical distress is a reason to stop using the drive. Seagate warns that continued use can make recovery more difficult or impossible, and advises shutting down and seeking recovery help. Do not open the drive: Seagate cautions that opening one outside a clean environment can cause further damage. Seagate guidance on unusual hard-drive noises.
If it remains responsive without severe physical symptoms
Prioritize a copy while the drive can still be read. Avoid unnecessary browsing, repeated scans, or repair attempts that add activity before you have preserved what you can. If SeaTools reports failure, Seagate recommends backing up immediately and replacing the drive; a failure warning is not a reason to keep relying on it. Seagate SeaTools guidance.
Choose between a careful DIY copy and professional recovery
| Situation | Safer path | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Drive is responsive and has no obvious mechanical distress | Make a prompt copy; a technically capable Linux user can consider GNU ddrescue. | It is a command-line tool, and you must correctly identify the input and output. A separate output device or file is required. |
| Clicking, grinding, repeated spin-up, or other obvious physical distress | Power down and contact a professional recovery service. | Further operation may worsen the situation. Recovery outcome and cost are not established by the cited guidance. |
| Data is especially valuable or the device-level steps are unfamiliar | Consider professional help before attempting a DIY rescue. | GNU ddrescue’s manual assumes users understand the devices and operations; no comparative success rates or prices are established. |
Seagate describes professional recovery as requiring specialized tools and skill. No recovery service can be assumed to guarantee an outcome.
#1 Best Overall
- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
Use GNU ddrescue only if you can identify the devices safely
GNU ddrescue can copy from an input file or block device to an output file or device. Its algorithm is designed to rescue readable areas first when read errors occur, and a mapfile records progress so an interrupted rescue can resume efficiently. The GNU ddrescue manual, version 1.30 (2026), states: “The mapfile is an essential part of ddrescue’s effectiveness.” See the GNU ddrescue manual.
- Prepare a separate destination. Use another device or an output file with enough available space for the copy you intend to make. Treat a destination device as at risk of being overwritten; do not use a disk containing data you need to keep.
- Identify the source and destination deliberately. Confirm which device is failing and which is the destination before starting. Device names can change after a reboot, so do not reuse a remembered identifier or guess. If you cannot confidently distinguish them, stop and ask an experienced Linux user or a recovery professional.
- Keep the failing source unmounted read/write. GNU warns against rescuing a read/write-mounted partition. Avoid filesystem repair or other write operations on the failing source.
- Run ddrescue with an input, output, and mapfile. Follow the manual for the system and device types involved. The mapfile is what lets the rescue track progress and resume rather than start from scratch after an interruption.
- Work from the copy afterward. If the copied filesystem needs repair, attempt it on the copy, not on the failing original. GNU warns that repairing a filesystem with I/O errors can lose more data; its tutorial recommends making a copy and trying repairs on that copy.
These are safety principles, not a device-specific command recipe: choosing the wrong output can overwrite data, and the correct device identifiers depend on the machine. GNU’s manual and tutorial explain the operations in detail.

Do not treat backup as a fix
A successful copy does not establish that the source drive is healthy or safe to reuse. Once important files are preserved, replace a drive that has been reported as failing rather than trusting it as the only copy. If copying produces I/O errors, avoid filesystem repair on the original; preserve the copy and consider professional recovery, especially if the missing data matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What destination should you use?
A separate external drive is one possible destination, but the cited guidance does not establish a recommended model, capacity, or interface. Choose a destination with sufficient space for the material you need to preserve, and ensure it is not the failing source. For important data, keep in mind that a single copy is not a long-term backup strategy.
