SMART data can reveal warning signals associated with a higher risk of drive failure, but it cannot reliably predict when an individual drive will fail—or certify that a drive is safe. Treat an alert as a reason to protect your files and investigate, not as a countdown. Keep an independent backup whether SMART reports a problem or not.
What SMART status means
SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a feature available on many modern ATA, SCSI and NVMe storage devices. Compatible tools, including smartmontools, can read the health information, attributes, logs and test results that a device exposes. The exact information varies by device and interface.
A displayed status is an interpretation of the device’s reported information; it is not a warranty that the drive will keep working. Nor does an attribute value have a universal meaning across every manufacturer and model. Use model-specific documentation when interpreting raw values, and be cautious of generic threshold charts.
Can SMART data predict hard drive failure?
It can contribute useful risk signals, but SMART values alone do not provide a dependable failure date or individual forecast. The clearest cited evidence comes from a study by Eduardo Pinheiro, Wolf-Dietrich Weber and Luiz André Barroso, presented at FAST 2007. It analyzed more than 100,000 consumer-grade drives in Google’s professionally managed data centers, with data collected from December 2005 through August 2006. Those results describe that fleet and period; they are not current failure probabilities for every consumer drive.

Signals associated with higher failure risk
In that study, drives were more likely to fail after their first scan error. The authors reported that a drive with a first scan error was 39 times more likely to fail within 60 days than drives with no such errors. First errors in reallocation, offline reallocation and “probational” counts also correlated strongly with higher failure probability. These are population-level associations from the studied fleet—not odds or a remaining-life estimate for a particular drive.
Fleet analyses can show patterns without establishing a universal threshold. For example, Backblaze’s published SMART statistics use fleet data collected with smartmontools. Such data are useful for studying correlations across drives, but they do not create a portable pass/fail rule for an individual model.

Why a healthy report cannot rule out failure
In the Google study, more than 56% of failed drives had none of the four strong signals examined: scan errors, reallocation counts, offline reallocation counts and probational counts. When the analysis considered other SMART parameters as well, excluding temperature, more than 36% of failed drives still had zero counts on all variables considered. The authors concluded that models based on SMART parameters alone were unlikely to be useful for predicting individual drive failures.

Scan errors and errors or counts involving reallocation, offline reallocation and probational sectors were among the signals associated with higher failure rates in the Google fleet study. Their presence—especially if values worsen—can justify prompt attention, but no one attribute proves that a drive is about to fail. Attribute names, raw values and thresholds may differ by model, so interpret a report using documentation for the specific device.

The study found little correlation between failure rates and elevated temperature or activity levels in its deployment. That historical finding is not permission to ignore a manufacturer’s operating limits or cooling guidance; it does not establish a universal operating specification.

What to do when SMART reports a warning
- Protect important files first. Make or verify a separate backup before running lengthy diagnostics or continuing ordinary use if you suspect trouble. A second copy on the same physical drive is not an independent backup.
- Review the complete report. Note the drive model, connection type, status, attributes, logs and test results. Use a compatible tool such as smartmontools and consult the device maker’s documentation for model-specific interpretation.
- Look for change, not just one number. A worsening error or reallocation signal is a reason to investigate, but a single reading is not a reliable remaining-life calculation.
- Decide on diagnosis or replacement based on the full situation. Consider the complete report, operating context and the importance of the data. If files are inaccessible or unusually valuable, avoid repeated attempts that could worsen the situation and seek qualified data-recovery help.
How to use SMART without over-relying on it
- Use SMART as an early-warning aid alongside backups, not as a substitute for them.
- Take concerning alerts seriously even when the drive still appears to work normally.
- Do not assume a good status guarantees safety, or that a warning provides a precise failure date.
- Avoid applying one model’s raw attribute thresholds to another without device-specific support.
