Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePublic Wi-Fi is usually safe for routine use because encryption is now widespread, according to the FTC. Still, a familiar network name is not proof that a connection or website is legitimate. Use this checklist to reduce accidental connections, protect accounts, and know when a VPN or personal hotspot may help.
Before you join a public Wi-Fi network
- Turn off automatic connections. Disable settings that automatically join open or public Wi-Fi networks. This helps prevent your phone or laptop from connecting to a network you did not choose.
- Confirm the network name. Ask venue staff or check official signage for the exact network name before connecting. A lookalike name can be misleading; do not choose a network just because its name resembles the café, hotel, airport, or library.
- Update your devices and accounts. Install available operating-system, browser, and security-software updates. When practical, enable automatic updates. Use strong, unique passwords and turn on two-factor authentication for accounts that offer it. The FTC’s public Wi-Fi guidance recommends these basic protections.
- Consider a personal or work hotspot. If you have an available mobile hotspot, the NSA recommends it as an alternative to public Wi-Fi when configured with strong authentication and encryption. A hotspot is not a universal solution: availability and service depend on your device, plan, and carrier.
While you are connected
Check the website, not just the Wi-Fi
Before entering a password, payment detail, or other personal information, check that the browser shows HTTPS or a lock symbol. Check each relevant page, not only the site’s first page. HTTPS encrypts information sent between your browser and that website, but it does not prove the site is genuine: scammers can use HTTPS on fake pages too. Confirm the website address and spelling before signing in. The FTC explains this distinction in its consumer guidance and public Wi-Fi security tips.
Use a VPN thoughtfully
A VPN can help encrypt traffic across an open public network, but it does not make a fraudulent website trustworthy or secure a compromised device. It also means you are relying on the VPN provider and its app. The FTC advises consumers to research a VPN app, review the permissions it requests, check whether it encrypts information, and find out whether it shares information with third parties. These are evaluation points, not an endorsement of any provider; see the FTC’s VPN app tips.
Protect sensitive information and work access
- Do not reuse passwords across accounts. If one account is exposed, unique passwords limit the damage.
- Do not email financial details such as card, Social Security, or checking-account numbers. The FTC includes this advice in its public Wi-Fi tips.
- For workplace systems or sensitive organizational information, follow your employer’s policy and use organization-approved tools. NSA wireless guidance is aimed at national security, defense, and defense-industry teleworkers, so its specific practices are a strong workplace-security example rather than a universal consumer requirement.
When you finish
- Log out of accounts you used, particularly on a shared or borrowed device. The FTC advises logging out when you are done.
- Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC when you no longer need them. The NSA’s July 29, 2021 guidance announcement says: “At a minimum, NSA recommend disabling Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC when not in use.”
- If a network or website seemed suspicious, stop entering information. If you encountered a scam, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Public Wi-Fi, a VPN, or a hotspot?
These options shift what you rely on; none is automatically best in every situation. HTTPS remains important when using any of them because it protects the browser-to-website connection, not the legitimacy of the site.

| Option | What it can do | What you rely on | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public Wi-Fi | Provides convenient internet access; widespread website encryption makes routine use usually safe, according to the FTC. | The venue’s network, plus the security of your device, accounts, and destination websites. | Confirm the network name and check HTTPS and the web address before entering information. |
| VPN on public Wi-Fi | Can help encrypt traffic across an open network. | The VPN provider and app, including its permissions, encryption, and data-sharing practices. | You must choose and assess an app; a VPN does not validate a fake site. |
| Personal or organization-provided hotspot | Offers an alternative connection when available; NSA guidance recommends strong authentication and encryption. | Your mobile carrier and hotspot configuration. | Requires an available device and service; the sources do not establish that every carrier or hotspot is equally private. |
The FTC’s older public Wi-Fi transcript discusses password-protected WPA/WPA2 networks and says many public networks do not encrypt. That description should not be treated as a timeless account of current hotspot prevalence. The FTC’s February 2023 consumer article instead emphasizes that website encryption is widespread and public Wi-Fi is usually safe. A venue password alone does not establish that every part of a session is protected.
