The right ear-tip size is the one that seals securely without causing discomfort. Try the sizes supplied with your earbuds, seat them as the manufacturer directs, and check each ear separately—a different size may fit each side. If your model offers a fit test, use it to support your judgment, not to override pain or irritation.
How to tell whether your ear tips fit
A good fit feels comfortable and secure, stays in place during ordinary movement, and forms a seal. A tip that is too small or not seated properly may leak sound or let the earbud loosen; a tip that is too large may feel uncomfortable. Don’t assume the preinstalled medium is right for you.
Fit can affect sound and features, but the effects vary by model. Apple says a good seal supports better noise cancellation and richer bass; Bose says fit and seal affect sound clarity and external-noise reduction. Samsung connects proper wear with sound quality, comfort, and keeping the buds in place. Sony notes that unsuitable or improperly worn tips can affect sound quality, volume, noise cancelling, calls, touch controls, and Speak-to-Chat detection. These are manufacturer descriptions, not guarantees of a particular improvement for every listener.
How to choose and check your size
- Identify your exact model and generation. Check which tip sizes came with it and follow that model’s insertion instructions.
- Seat the earbuds before changing sizes. Adjust their position as directed. Poor positioning can feel like a size problem.
- Try the supplied sizes on each ear independently. Compare comfort, how securely each bud stays in during ordinary movement, and whether the seal and sound improve. The two ears may need different sizes.
- Run the model’s fit or seal test, if available. Reposition or change the tip and repeat the test. Treat its result as one check alongside comfort.
- Stop if fitting causes pain or irritation. Samsung advises discontinuing use and consulting a doctor for ear pain or skin irritation; Sony also advises stopping use if fitting causes discomfort.
How to test the earbud seal
First make sure the earbud is inserted and positioned according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Then use the test made for your exact model, if it has one. Test names and availability differ across models and software, so don’t apply instructions for one generation or brand to another.

A test can help identify a seal or wearing issue, but comfort still matters. If the result is uncertain, adjust the position or try another included size, then test again.
Special case: AirPods Pro 3 heart-rate sensing
For AirPods Pro 3, the tip size that gives the best acoustic seal may not be the one that gives the best heart-rate sensor accuracy: the sensor needs skin contact. This is specific to that model and should not be assumed to apply to other earbuds.

When to replace ear tips
If none of the supplied sizes gives a comfortable, secure fit, check the support instructions for your exact model and whether its maker sells replacement sizes. Apple says AirPods Pro tips are designed for their specific model and replacement sets are available. Sony’s WF-1000XM6 guide identifies its own tip sizes, warns that damaged tips can impair performance, and describes the tips as consumables.
Match both model and generation when looking for replacement ear tips for your exact earbud model. Do not assume a generic or third-party tip will fit or preserve the earbud’s features: compatibility and comparative performance are not established universally.
