Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo stop a phone reconnecting to one saved Wi-Fi network, disable that network’s automatic-join setting: on iPhone, turn off Auto-Join; on Android, turn off the saved network’s Auto-connect option if available. To stop Android Wi-Fi from turning on near saved networks, use the separate Turn on Wi-Fi automatically setting. Forgetting a network is a stronger option that removes its saved credentials.
Choose the control that matches what you want to stop
| What you want | Setting to change | What happens to the saved password |
|---|---|---|
| Stop joining one known network automatically | iPhone: that network’s Auto-Join. Android: its per-network Auto-connect option, if available. | It stays saved; you can connect manually. |
| Stop Android Wi-Fi from switching on near saved networks | Turn on Wi-Fi automatically in Network preferences, if your device offers it. | This changes when Wi-Fi activates, not the saved network’s connection preference. |
| Remove a network from the phone | Forget This Network on iPhone or Forget on Android. | The network and its saved credentials are removed. |
Stop an iPhone from automatically joining one Wi-Fi network
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Tap Edit to view known networks.
- Tap the More Info button beside the network.
- Turn off Auto-Join.
The network and password remain saved, so you can still select it to connect manually. The change takes effect after the iPhone disconnects—for example, after Wi-Fi is switched off and back on, or when the phone leaves the network’s range. Managed or supervised devices may not show this control. See Apple’s instructions for forgetting a Wi-Fi network or preventing automatic joining.
Stop an Android phone from automatically joining one saved network
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet.
- Open the saved network’s settings.
- Turn off the per-network Auto-connect control, if your phone provides one.
Android’s labels and menu locations vary by manufacturer and version. Google says a device with Wi-Fi on automatically connects to nearby networks it has connected to before; the Android Open Source Project also documents user control over automatic connection for an individual saved network. See Google’s Android Wi-Fi connection guidance and the Android Open Source Project’s network-selection documentation.
If there is no per-network automatic-connection switch, choose Forget for that network. To use it again, select it and provide the credentials again. On supported devices, Google documents another, separate setting: Settings > Network & internet > Internet > Network preferences > Turn on Wi-Fi automatically. Turn this off to prevent Wi-Fi from activating automatically near saved networks; it does not replace the setting for automatically joining a particular network once Wi-Fi is on. Options can vary by device and Android version. See Google’s guidance on Android network preferences.

Forget a saved network instead
Forgetting a network removes its saved credentials, so reconnecting requires selecting it again and entering its password or other credentials.
- iPhone: Open the network’s info/settings screen and tap Forget This Network. Apple notes that forgetting it may also remove it from other devices using iCloud Keychain with the same Apple Account.
- Android: Open the saved network’s settings and tap Forget.
Choose this when you no longer want the phone to retain the network. If you want to keep the password for occasional manual connections, turn off automatic joining instead.

Separate iPhone settings for new networks and hotspots
If the issue is not a known saved network, two other iPhone settings may be relevant. Ask to Join Networks controls whether the iPhone asks about available new networks; it is not the control for rejoining a known network. Auto-Join Hotspot separately controls whether the iPhone joins a nearby Personal Hotspot when no Wi-Fi network is available. Use the setting that matches the behavior you want to change.
