If your Bluetooth headphones work with a laptop but keep cutting out on your phone—or the reverse—start by troubleshooting the device that drops the connection. Charge both devices, test the headphones with another source, and check for competing connections before changing settings or replacing anything. If the headphones disconnect from every source, follow the headphone maker’s reset, firmware, or repair instructions instead.

First find out whether the headphones or the device is the problem

  1. Charge the headphones and the phone, tablet, or computer. Turn the headphones on and confirm they are connected to the source you intend to use.
  2. Keep the devices close together and play audio stored on the source device, if available. Compare it with streamed audio. Apple notes that wireless headphones may lose connection more often during streaming; local playback helps distinguish a Bluetooth problem from a network or streaming interruption. See Apple’s guidance for wireless audio that cuts out or sounds distorted.
  3. Test the headphones with a second source, such as a laptop or another phone. If possible, also test a different Bluetooth audio device with the source that keeps disconnecting.

These comparisons help narrow down the fault, but neither test alone proves its cause. If the headphones fail with multiple sources, consult their maker’s instructions for model-specific reset, firmware, and repair steps. If they work elsewhere but Bluetooth headphones disconnect from your phone or computer, continue with the steps for that source.

Check range, interference, and competing connections

Move the source closer to the headphones and reduce obstacles between them. Apple’s iPhone guide gives approximately 10 meters as a pairing distance for an accessory; that is a reference, not a guaranteed range for continuous audio in every environment or with every product. Busy Wi-Fi areas, poorly shielded cables, microwaves, and wireless speakers can also contribute to audio interruptions. Apple recommends moving away from potential sources of interference when troubleshooting cutouts.

Temporarily disconnect the headphones from other paired devices. Some compatible headphones support Multipoint, which lets them connect to two audio sources and switch between them. A call or audio playback on the second device can make it seem as though the first device is disconnecting. Google’s Multipoint setup instructions apply to compatible headphones; the documented Android setup requires Android 8 or later and Google Play Services. Not all headphones support Multipoint.

Fix Bluetooth headphones that keep disconnecting on Windows

Microsoft says Bluetooth dropouts in Windows can be caused by power-saving settings, outdated drivers, or temporary system glitches. Try these Windows 11 steps first; menu names may differ on Windows 10.

Run the troubleshooter and check power settings

  1. In Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter.
  2. Check whether Battery Saver or another energy-saving mode is active. Connect the PC to power and retest if practical.
  3. Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, and open the properties for the Bluetooth adapter. On the Power Management tab, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, if that option is available.

Microsoft’s Bluetooth disconnecting guidance includes these power, service, and driver checks.

Restart Bluetooth and update the adapter driver

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Bluetooth Support Service, right-click it, and select Restart. If Restart is unavailable, use the service’s available start option.
  3. In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the adapter, and select Update driver. Check the computer maker’s support page for a model-specific driver or firmware update as well.

Refresh the pairing and check for interference

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, select the headphones, and choose Remove device.
  2. Restart the PC, put the headphones in pairing mode according to their manual, then add them again from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device.
  3. Install available Windows updates and retest. If the headphones still cut out, move the PC and headphones closer and temporarily disconnect nearby wireless devices.

Some unshielded USB devices plugged into USB 3.0 ports can interfere with Bluetooth. If one is connected, move it or its cable away from the Bluetooth hardware and test again. Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth connection troubleshooting and general Bluetooth troubleshooting cover additional checks. The latter still covers Windows 10, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended October 14, 2025.

A USB Bluetooth adapter is worth considering only if the PC lacks built-in Bluetooth or diagnosis points to a problem with its Bluetooth hardware. An adapter can add Bluetooth to a Windows device that does not have it; it is not a general fix for headphones disconnecting from one device.

Fix Bluetooth headphones that keep disconnecting from an iPhone or iPad

  1. Charge the headphones, turn them off and back on, and keep them near the iPhone or iPad.
  2. If they pair with other devices but not the iPhone or iPad, disconnect or unpair them from those other devices before trying again. Apple specifically recommends this when an accessory pairs with some devices but not the target iPhone or iPad. See Apple’s Bluetooth accessory connection steps.
  3. If the headphones were previously paired with the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button next to the headphones, and choose Forget This Device.
  4. Put the headphones into discovery mode using the maker’s instructions, then pair them again from Settings > Bluetooth.
  5. If audio still cuts out, restart the iPhone or iPad and test local audio again. Reduce distance and obstructions, and move away from busy Wi-Fi areas or other possible interference.

Apple’s audio-cutout guidance covers these range, playback, and interference checks. Headphone-specific pairing and reset steps can vary by model.

When to stop troubleshooting the source device

If the headphones remain stable with other sources but drop only from one phone, tablet, or PC, keep the investigation focused on that device’s Bluetooth settings, pairing record, radio, and drivers. If multiple Bluetooth accessories also fail with that source, the source’s Bluetooth hardware or software becomes a stronger suspect. On Windows, check the computer maker’s driver guidance before considering an adapter; on a phone or tablet, use the manufacturer’s support guidance. If the headphones fail across sources, contact their maker with the model and the tests you have already tried.
