Dota 2’s five positions describe how a team shares lane access, farm priority, and responsibilities—not five fixed classes of hero. Positions 1–3 are usually cores that receive more resources; positions 4–5 are supports that work with less guaranteed farm. The exact lane and job can change with the hero, draft, matchup, and state of the game.
What do positions 1 through 5 mean?
The numbers are shorthand for relative farm priority: position 1 generally has the highest priority, followed by 2 and 3, while 4 and 5 usually receive less. They are team conventions, not a strict allocation system or a guarantee of who gets every creep. Teams adjust when a hero needs resources urgently or another core can make better use of them.
Position numbers also do not define hero classes. Valve’s Hero Browser has functional filters such as Carry and Support, with additional tags such as Nuker and Jungler; its Puck page, for example, lists both Carry and Support. Valve’s historical role-queue description instead names lane preferences—Safe, Mid, Offlane, or Support—and says players could choose a hero suited to team needs. These are different ways of describing a hero’s capabilities and a player’s lane preference, not interchangeable labels: Valve’s Hero Browser overview, Valve’s International 2018 role-queue description, and Puck’s Hero Browser page.
How the five positions compare

These lanes and duties are common patterns, not rules for every match. Picks, matchups, and team plans can shift both where a hero starts and what the team needs them to do.

What does a carry do?
The carry—usually position 1—gets substantial access to farm so the hero can build items and become a major threat later. The role is about converting resources into impact, not simply waiting for the late game: a carry may need to survive a difficult lane, farm efficiently, respond to fights, or help take objectives when the opportunity is right.
The precise timing and item path depend on the hero and match. A Valve-hosted community carry build illustrates farming tools, lane pressure, scaling item progression, and combat, but it is a hero-specific, patch-sensitive example rather than a universal build or rule: Valve-hosted community builds.

How mid and offlane cores differ
Mid: position 2
Position 2 takes the middle lane. That lane can give a mid hero an independent level and item curve, which may let the hero influence other lanes or fights. Roaming and early tempo are common patterns, not fixed requirements: the official role-queue description establishes Mid as a lane preference, not a universal mid-game playbook.
Offlane: position 3
Position 3 is the core most commonly associated with the offlane, often contesting the enemy carry’s lane. Offlaners frequently bring durability, initiation, control, or utility, but no single combination defines the role. Draft choices and lane matchups can make the offlaner’s job more aggressive, defensive, or resource-hungry.

What is the difference between soft support and hard support?
Both positions support the team while generally taking less farm than the cores. The useful distinction is relative priority and flexibility: position 5 commonly has the lowest farm priority and often starts by helping the carry’s lane; position 4 usually has somewhat more freedom to roam, support the offlane, or help create plays. Their duties overlap and can be exchanged as the draft and lane situation demand.
Support work is broader than buying wards. It can include helping a lane, providing vision, blocking camps, setting up control, enabling allies to move around the map, or saving a teammate. A Valve-hosted community support build explicitly discusses a position 5 and gives examples involving vision, camp blocking, mobility, and allied saves. It is a hero-specific build, not an authoritative definition of every position 4 or 5: Valve-hosted community builds.

How to use the roles when learning Dota 2
- Use the position number to understand a team’s expected farm priority, not as a rigid rule about who may take a creep.
- Use hero-role labels as clues about what a hero can do; a hero may fit more than one functional role.
- Check the draft and lane matchup before assuming a position’s usual lane or job.
- Expect strategies and hero assignments to shift with patches and game state. Treat role descriptions as starting points, not guarantees.
