For pensioners whose Pension Sanctioning Authority (PSA) is enrolled in Jeevan Pramaan and who can complete a supported authentication route, a Digital Life Certificate (DLC) is often more convenient: it is sent electronically to the pension disbursing agency, so the pensioner does not have to hand in that digital certificate. The conventional physical route remains available, and some pensioners—including those who are re-employed or remarried—must use it. Check the pensioner’s eligibility and the authority’s current rules before choosing.
What is the difference between a digital and physical life certificate?
Digital Life Certificate (Jeevan Pramaan)
Jeevan Pramaan is an Aadhaar-based, biometric-enabled service. After successful authentication, it generates a certificate and unique Pramaan ID, then makes the certificate electronically available to the Pension Disbursing Agency (PDA). The pensioner can download a copy, but does not need to physically submit the DLC to a bank, post office, or other PDA. The official Jeevan Pramaan FAQ explains how the service works.
Conventional physical life certificate
A physical certificate is submitted through the conventional process for the pension scheme and disbursing agency. There is no single procedure established for every pensioner: ask the relevant PDA which form, certification method, delivery route, and deadline apply. Jeevan Pramaan describes the digital facility as an addition to existing submission methods, not a compulsory replacement.
Who is eligible to use Jeevan Pramaan?
The pensioner’s PSA must be onboarded on Jeevan Pramaan. The official FAQ says re-employed and remarried pensioners are not eligible for the service and must submit a life certificate conventionally. Confirm the authority’s current onboarded status through the official Jeevan Pramaan portal before starting.

Check that Aadhaar details and pension records are ready and match. IPPB lists Aadhaar, a mobile number, Aadhaar registration with the PDA, and pension details such as PPO and account number among its prerequisites for DLC generation. A certificate can still be rejected if pension details are wrong, and generation alone does not mean the authority has approved it.
How can a pensioner get a digital certificate?
Use phone face authentication
If the pensioner is in India and has a supported phone and can use the app, the face-authentication route uses the phone camera; it does not require a separate fingerprint or iris device. The Jeevan Pramaan download page lists Android 10 or later and iOS 14 or later for the respective apps. App requirements can change, so check the current page before installation.

Use a fingerprint or iris device
A self-service biometric route using fingerprint or iris authentication may require a compatible external scanner and RD service. The official download page specifies an external fingerprint or iris scanner for Windows. Check the published device and service requirements rather than buying a generic scanner on the assumption it will work.
Get help in person or request a doorstep visit
The Jeevan Pramaan FAQ identifies Citizen Service Centres and PDA offices, including banks and post offices, as places where a pensioner can seek assisted generation. Where available, India Post Payments Bank also offers a postal doorstep service: contact a post office or request a postman or Grameen Dak Sevak visit. IPPB says this is available to IPPB and non-IPPB customers whose agency is live for DLC. Its listed charge is ₹70, inclusive of GST and cess, per successful DLC, with no additional doorstep charge. Confirm availability and the fee when arranging a visit because service details may change.

Which route should you choose?
- Choose digital if the PSA is onboarded, the pensioner is eligible, and a supported phone, biometric device, or assisted service is practical. It can avoid physically delivering the DLC to the PDA.
- Use the physical route if the pensioner is ineligible for Jeevan Pramaan, cannot complete an available digital route, or the authority directs them to submit conventionally.
- If travel is difficult, check whether a local post office can arrange an assisted or doorstep DLC service and verify the current fee before booking.
What happens after the certificate is generated?
Download the DLC and check its details, including the pension information, then follow the authority’s instructions if anything is incorrect. The Jeevan Pramaan FAQ states that a Pramaan ID is not valid for life: the PSA determines the certificate’s validity period. A generated certificate is subject to the authority’s approval, and incorrect particulars can lead to rejection. Check with the PDA if you need to confirm receipt, approval, validity, or the applicable deadline.
