If your home is outside a rural village or in a municipal area, do not assume JJM applies: ask the relevant local water-supply authority which scheme covers your address.
Who is eligible for Jal Jeevan Mission?
JJM’s operational scope is rural households in villages and habitations. Its infrastructure may be planned for a single village, several villages, or a stand-alone settlement system, so eligibility for a particular home depends on the settlement’s plan and implementation status—not simply on whether a household wants a tap.
The 2020 operational guidelines exclude isolated single houses and farmhouses far from villages or habitations from JJM funding. Residents in those locations should ask the state or local water-supply authority which alternative scheme, if any, applies. The central materials do not establish one universal alternative application process.
JJM is the central mission; state and local authorities put water-supply projects into operation. A local scheme may be the way a village receives service under the mission, but the scheme name and the household’s inclusion must be confirmed locally.

How to tell whether JJM or a local scheme applies

The village’s Village Action Plan records implementation and maintenance arrangements. Ask the Gram Panchayat or village water committee to confirm the plan and which scheme serves your home.
How to check your village’s coverage and service status
- Look up the village or settlement on the JJM dashboard. Use it as a starting point for status, not as a substitute for confirming whether your individual household is included.
- Ask the Gram Panchayat or Paani Samiti whether your household is listed in the village plan, which scheme serves it, and whether a connection or repair is pending.
- If the dashboard and local information do not resolve the question, contact the district or state water-supply office and ask it to verify the address against current scheme records.
No current national or locality-level coverage total is established here. Treat older percentages as dated snapshots, not as proof of present-day service in your village.

Does having a tap mean the water service is functional?
No. JJM distinguishes a connection from a functioning service, which involves regularity, quantity, and prescribed drinking-water quality. The 2020 operational guidelines specify at least 55 litres per capita per day and refer to BIS:10500 for water quality. Because the official guidelines index lists newer JJM 2.0 operational guidance dated May 22, 2026, check the current guidance or ask the responsible state authority before treating the 2020 figures as the governing standard today. - Start with the village. Ask the Gram Panchayat or Paani Samiti (village water committee) whether your household is covered, which scheme serves the settlement, and how to report a new connection request, interruption, leak, or quality concern.
- Escalate unresolved rural issues. Contact the District Water and Sanitation Mission or State Water and Sanitation Mission through the current local helpline or online grievance channel. The Gram Panchayat and Paani Samiti guide identifies these grievance routes, but the actual channel varies by jurisdiction.
- For municipal or other non-rural addresses, contact the local authority. Ask the municipal body or local/state water-supply department which scheme governs the address and how to apply or complain. JJM does not provide one universal alternative route for these locations.
Contact numbers and portals depend on your state and district, so a national number cannot be reliably supplied without knowing where you live. When you contact an office, include your village or ward, full address, and a concise description of whether the issue is a missing connection, interruption, leak, or water-quality concern.
