If sound changed on your Samsung Galaxy after an app updated, first identify which sound is affected, then check the matching Galaxy setting and audio connection. Restart the phone and retest; if only one app is affected, clear its cache before considering more disruptive resets. An app update may be related, but it is not proof that the update caused a Galaxy-wide sound fault.
Identify which sound is affected
Different symptoms point to different controls. Before changing settings, test a few cases: play media, receive a notification or call, and try a system touch sound. Note whether audio comes from the phone speaker, headphones, or a Bluetooth device.
- No sound anywhere: Check system-wide mute settings and audio routing.
- Media is silent, but calls or alerts work: Check the media volume and the affected app’s output route.
- Ringtones or notifications are silent: Check notification volume, Do not disturb, and the app’s own notification settings.
- Touch sounds or other system sounds are missing: Check the system sound controls.
- Volume buttons affect the wrong sound: Open the volume panel in Settings and adjust the relevant category directly.
Galaxy menu names and locations can differ by model and software version.
Check Galaxy sound settings and connections
Make sure all sounds are not muted
On many Galaxy devices, go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements > Mute all sounds and make sure the setting is off. Samsung says this control can mute media, notifications, system sounds, and the other person’s voice during calls; it may also prevent volume adjustment. Samsung’s no-sound troubleshooting guide describes this and the other sound controls below.

Check Do not disturb and the sound channels
Go to Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb and temporarily switch it off to test. Do not disturb silences calls and notifications, subject to any exceptions you have allowed.
Then open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume and raise the channel that matches the symptom, such as media or notifications. For missing touch sounds, check Settings > Sounds and vibration > System sound. Adjusting one category does not necessarily change the others.
Check where app audio is playing
If audio seems to leave the phone, disconnect headphones and other audio accessories temporarily, then test the built-in speaker. If Separate app sound is enabled and you do not intend to route that app elsewhere, turn it off and test again. Samsung includes connection checks and Separate app sound in its sound troubleshooting steps.

Restart the phone and retest
Restart the Galaxy, open the same app, and test the same sound channel again before changing more settings. Samsung lists a temporary system error as one possible source of sound trouble and recommends a restart as a troubleshooting step. If the problem remains, continue with the branch that matches your symptom.

Check the app’s own sound and notification controls
If system sounds and other apps work, first review the affected app’s volume, alert, and notification-category settings. Android and app-level notification controls can let one type of alert be silent while other notifications still sound. The exact controls depend on the app.
Clear the app cache
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the affected app, then tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache, reopen the app, and test its sound.
Clearing the cache removes temporary files, not the app’s saved data. Menu paths can vary by software version and app; see Samsung’s instructions for clearing app cache and data.

Clear data only if you accept the reset
If the sound issue is clearly limited to this app and clearing the cache did not help, you can consider Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage > Clear data. This resets the app and removes personal settings or data saved locally in it. You may need to sign in again, and unsynced local information could be lost. It is not a guaranteed sound fix.
Use Safe mode to test for another app conflict
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps, helping determine whether one may be interfering with sound. Follow Samsung’s Safe mode instructions for your Galaxy model, then play audio and test the affected sound channel.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If sound works in Safe mode: A downloaded app may be involved. Restart normally, remove recently installed apps one at a time, and retest after each removal.
- If sound still fails in Safe mode: The cause may not be a downloaded app. Continue with the settings steps or contact Samsung if the issue persists.
Safe mode is a diagnostic test, not a permanent way to use the phone.

Reset app preferences or sound-related settings cautiously
Reset app preferences for persistent app behavior
Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1 update troubleshooting guide documents Settings > Apps > More options > Reset app preferences for some update issues. This is an optional step, not a universal audio repair: it can reset notification settings, default apps, and permission restrictions while leaving existing app data in place. Afterward, review affected apps’ notifications, defaults, and permissions. See Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1 troubleshooting guide.
Reset all settings before considering a factory reset
For a persistent issue, Samsung lists Settings > General management > Reset > Reset all settings as a later troubleshooting step; the exact path may vary. This is not the same as a factory data reset. Review the reset confirmation and Samsung’s guidance for your device so you know what settings will change.

Keep a factory data reset as a last resort. It erases apps, settings, and personal files, so back up important data first. Samsung explains the data-loss risk in its Galaxy app-management guidance.
What the update history does—and does not—show
Samsung’s support archive includes a historical report about some Galaxy phones on Android S / One UI 4 where Sound and Vibration settings sometimes reset. That report is specific to those older devices and software; it does not establish that current app updates generally cause Galaxy sound problems. Read the archived Samsung Canada support response.
