Then check the connection, improve Wi-Fi conditions, pause other network activity, and restart the affected equipment before considering a plan upgrade or new hardware.
Identify what is going wrong
Blurry or pixelated video is not quite the same symptom as freezing, stuttering, or distorted video. A stream can also look soft at first and sharpen after a short time: Netflix says it adapts playback quality to connection speed, and may begin at a lower resolution before switching higher. A slow or unstable connection can therefore cause both lower picture quality and interruptions.
If the picture is distorted, incorrectly sized, skipping, or stuttering rather than simply blurry, the TV, streaming device, or video cable may be involved. Netflix separates these symptoms in its video quality troubleshooting guidance.
Check whether the issue is limited to one title, app, or device
- Try another title in the same app. If only one title is affected, the problem may be limited to that content rather than your whole connection.
- Try another streaming app, if available. If one app has trouble but another plays normally, focus on that app and its device-specific support steps.
- Try another device on the same network. If the problem follows one device, troubleshoot that device or its connection. If several devices and services are affected, investigate the network.
These comparisons help distinguish a content or app issue from a device or network issue. Netflix recommends noting which devices are affected and whether they connect over Wi-Fi or a cable when discussing a network problem with your internet service provider (ISP). See its troubleshooting steps.

Check the connection and interpret speed results carefully
Run a speed check suitable for the streaming service you are using. If possible, compare the result over Wi-Fi with a wired connection or another network. A speed result is a useful clue, not proof on its own: the service, the device, Wi-Fi conditions, and other network activity can all affect playback.
Netflix publishes these connection-speed recommendations for its video resolutions. They are Netflix recommendations, not universal requirements for every streaming service or household; the source page does not state a publication year.

These figures come from Netflix’s internet connection speed recommendations. Do not assume you need a faster plan simply because one stream is blurry or buffering; first compare devices, connections, and network conditions.
Improve Wi-Fi before changing your plan
- Move the streaming device closer to the router and test playback again.
- Avoid placing a device where it is recessed into a wall or blocked by metal, which can interfere with Wi-Fi reception.
- If the device supports Ethernet, compare playback on a wired connection. Port or adapter compatibility depends on the device, and a cable will not fix every cause.
- If another network is available, test it to see whether the problem changes with the connection.
Netflix recommends using a wired or Wi-Fi network when available. Its connection troubleshooting guidance also covers testing another network and improving the device’s proximity to the router.

Pause other internet activity, then restart
Pause downloads, large uploads, and other internet use while testing the stream. Prime Video specifically advises pausing other internet activity, particularly when other devices are using the network at the same time; see Prime Video playback troubleshooting.
Next, restart the affected streaming device. If the problem continues, restart the router and test again. Use the streaming service’s instructions for your specific platform, since restart and network-reset steps vary by device.

Review app, device, and playback-quality settings
- Install available updates for the streaming app, device, or browser, as applicable. Netflix includes updating the device or browser among its troubleshooting steps.
- On supported devices, YouTube lists clearing the app cache as a troubleshooting option: YouTube video playback troubleshooting.
- For Netflix, Auto lets playback quality adapt to the connection. If you have forced a different quality setting and playback starts buffering or freezing, switch back to Auto. Netflix explains that it adapts quality to connection speed in its video quality guidance.
Exact menus depend on the streaming provider, operating system, TV, and streaming device. Check the relevant service or manufacturer instructions for button-by-button steps.

If several devices or streaming services still have trouble after you have tested the connection, improved Wi-Fi conditions, paused other network activity, and restarted equipment, contact your ISP. Explain which devices are affected and whether each uses Wi-Fi or a wired connection. That information helps narrow down whether the issue is limited to one device or affects the broader connection.
